The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 4 - 10, 1944

Saturday, March 4, 1944

Dorothea and Bill went to town. I made rolls and choc. cake. Billie went over to Aunt Linnies. Mama finished putting puzzle together. Very cold.

Sunday, March 5, 1944

Bill went fishing with Charles Robbins. Dorothea went to Fern's to visit. Billie went up with Robert to Merton Kimball's. Bob had his pigs butchered. Bill, Dorothea and I went to movies Lassie Come Home.


Monday, March 6, 1944

We washed. Bill went to town to buy overalls. Sent letter to Milan. Bill sent his insurance renewal. Nice day.


Tuesday, March 7, 1944

Ironed today. A bad day snow and rain. Papa got teeth. I ironed.


Wednesday, March 8, 1944

Had fried clams and french fried potatoes for dinner. Bob's family up in eve to cut up his hogs. I went to bed sick caused from eating dinner. Billie was sick too. Bill brought guinea hens home.


Thursday, March 9, 1944

Went to town in morning with Bill. We washed in P.M. Jim Reynolds Jr. got killed in shipyard tonite.


Friday, March 10, 1944

Bill and I went to town. Washed kitchen floor in P.M. Ironed in evening. Very cold day.
