The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Saturday, April 15, 1944

Bill went to town. Brud was up to see us. Smart kids down today. Billie gone to show with them. It's been cold and cloudy and stormy tonite.


Sunday, April 16, 1944

Bill worked today. Been raining all day. Nobody here today except Val, Rosie and Nancy Smart.


Monday, April 17, 1944

Betty one year two months today. Snowed and rained today. I washed. Betty Louise walked today again and she walked all over the house. Bill and I went up to Minnie's.


Tuesday, April 18, 1944

Sun shined all day. Billie put baby walker upstairs today. Mama went down to Dolores today. Dorothea down to Ferns. Betty still walking. Minnie and kids down tonite.


Wednesday, April 19, 1944

Nice warm day. Bill went to town. Billie and I cut the ice up out back today. Billie and Val and Betty out. I made rolls, pie and cake. Ironed and churned.


Thursday, April 20, 1944

Bill went to town. I washed and ironed. Put the separator out back for first time. Hung clothes out back today for first time. Dorothea went to movies with Johanna Mayberry, she's down to Fern's.


Friday, April 21, 1944

Cleaned up the house and am ready to go to town tomorrow. Bill went to Portland with Chas. Birly (sp?) to get shoes. Left at 7 a.m. Bill gone smelting with Raymond Allen.
