The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 13 - 19, 1944



Saturday, May 13, 1944

I got up real early and got my cooking done. Cleaned my broom hallway and dark bedroom today.


Sunday, May 14, 1944

Bill worked both shifts. Kennard, Fern and Lloyd, Bob’s folks and Kennie’s were up today. Rayburn and Lorraine up for dinner. Took Louisa to hospital this morning.


Monday, May 15, 1944

We did a big wash. Bill came home this a.m. Went back to work not any sleep. Rained by showers.


Tuesday, May 16, 1944

We began to clean in the front bedroom downstairs. Warm. Dolores went to hospital. Bill worked two shifts. I went up to Minnie’s.


Wednesday, May 17, 1944

Sent for mama’s wallpaper. Bill came home this a.m. from shipyard. Kennard here for dinner. Kennie and Dot up. Hot today. We finished front bedroom. Guernsey calf born.


Thursday, May 18, 1944
Clean mama’s room, clothes pressed, and all away. Cold today. Bill worked second shifts.


Friday, May 19, 1944

Did big wash today. Baby sick. Still cold. Charlie and Jean up tonight. Dot and Aunt Mina called a few minutes. Dolores operated on.
