The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 27 - 30, 1961



Wednesday, September 27, 1961

Betty ironed. I done some cleaning. We sure have a busy week coming up. I washed the kitchen curtains and living room curtains. Kay up here in evening.



Thursday, September 28, 1961

I washed, churned, done some cooking. Up to Delores’s. She had a nervous upset. She had Dr. Newth.



Friday, September 29, 1961

A nice day. I done the living room and the downstairs bedrooms. Went to town in evening. Betty to the movies. Up to see Delores this a.m. She is a little better. Billie up to Gorham New Hampshire with Jerry Howard to help him get a washer.



Saturday, September 30, 1961 MIKE CAME

A nice sunny day. Blanche, Mama and I to Portland to do wedding shopping. Betty home all day waiting for a call from MIKE. He is to come home today or tonight. Blanche and Bob here for supper. Nola Raye came down today. Betty done up the housework and ironed. David called in evening to wait for Mike’s called. He called about nine. Betty to Portland with Mike’s mom and and Betty (?) Jo to meet him. They stayed up to Auburn all night.
