The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 8 - 11, 1961



Wednesday, November 8, 1961

Partly cloudy. I done up my work, got my ironing all done. Done a bit of cooking. Betty gone all night, came home late in p.m. Done her chores, back down to Rowena’s. Dobbins sawed the wood. I sent Joy a letter. Betty got a letter from Mike. He well be home this weekend.



Thursday, November 9, 1961

Cold. Partly cloudy. I done up my work. Went to town with Lloyd and done the heft of Mama’s Christmas shopping for her. I came home and shampooed my hair and put on a rinse. Betty down to Rowena’s again all day.



Friday, November 10, 1961

Fair. I wrapped Christmas gifts for Mama. Betty to Portland with Bessie Waterman. I am still figuring on Christmas. No money this year for me, how am I to buy my Christmas gifts? I am figuring every day. Bills Bills Bills and more bills. I hope everything will work out. To town tonight. Done rest of Mama’s Christmas shopping. Betty gone up to Auburn to get Mary Lou and Doreen.



Saturday, November 11, 1961

Partly cloudy. I cooked. Done up the work. Doreen and Mary Lou Boutilier here this weekend. Very nice girls. Very sensible. They went riding in evening, went to town bowling. Bill sick all day. Billie worked at Raymond half day. In p.m. he worked up to Chet’s. Blanche here nearly all day.
