The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 6 - 9, 1961



Friday, October 6, 1961

A very nice warm day. I cleaned up after the wedding. Betty and Mike honeymooning at the cottage for a week. I went to Fryeburg Fair with Blanche. A nice day. I didn’t go to town tonight.



Saturday, October 7, 1961 Letter and picture from Adair’s

A nice day. I did a big wash. Got letter and picture from Dorothea, very good. Also a letter to Mr. and Mrs. Michael Boutilier. First one they got together. Also Betty’s pictures came in today’s paper. Not very good. In p.m. Bill, Betty and Mike to Fryeburg Fair. Kids down town in evening.



Sunday, October 8, 1961

Nice in a.m. Bill, Billie, Betty and Mike picked apples. In p.m. I went to the Beech Ridge Car races with Dave, Betty and Mike in p.m. I liked it very much.



Monday, October 9, 1961 Very warm sunny

A nice sunny warm day. I churned and washed. Betty rode her horse. Mike hunted for a little while. In p.m. they wrote out the thank you notes. Billie fixed a sore on the cows knee. I went to town. Bill took Mr. and Mrs. Mike Boutilier to Auburn after supper. Mike is a very nice boy. We all like him very much. I hope he and Betty will be happy.
