The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 7 - 10, 1961



Thursday, December 7, 1961

I went over to help Blanche today. Came home, cooked, cleaned up the kitchen. Betty and Bill got the tree in and decorated. A very pretty tree. Betty done such a good job. Bill got her a TV console set today trading. Betty is pleased with it. Billie got the pig home tonight, very good meat. Bill and Betty wrapped it.



Friday, December 8, 1961

Bill got his check. We went to Norway. Took the hams and bacon over. Betty to town in p.m. Mike called, he is to be sent to Fort Lewis, Washington tomorrow. He talked with Betty for over an hour. We hated to have him go.



Saturday, December 9, 1961

A very nice day. I washed, cooked, cleaned up the house. Billie’s car broke down. I washed dining room curtains, washed the windows. Betty to town in evening. Mike left today at 4 PM for Fort Lewis, Washington. We wanted him home for Christmas. Feel so sorry for him. Cows got the flu.



Sunday, December 10, 1961

Cloudy. Some light snow and rain. Aunt Ava called. Bob, Blanche, Kennie, Dot, Kennard and Lloyd. Fern sick. I ironed. Bill called out to sand. Brud’s folks had a girl today.
