The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 11 - 14, 1961

Monday, December 11, 1961 Susan E Deming’s birthday

A nice warm day. I did a big wash. Betty down to help Fern. Lloyd called, Kennard called, Aunt Ava called. Bill bed all day. Got the clothes in etc.

Tuesday, December 12, 1961

Cloudy and cold. I got the work done. Down to Ferns to make plans for Christmas etc. Betty to town. Bill back to work after a week of vacationing. Oh yeah!

Wednesday, December 13, 1961

A nice day, not too cold. It began to get colder toward night. Kind of windy. Had a nice warm week so far. I cleaned the kitchen and bathroom. Betty home all day waiting for word from Mike. Aunt Ava and Kennard called. Bill back to work, which is a relief. Some day maybe we can have a real vacation???

Thursday, December 14, 1961

14 above this morning. Real cold. Colder last year. I washed windows upstairs, cleaned the kitchen chairs. Cleaned up all of the house. No word from Mike as yet. Betty off to town to do some work for someone.
