The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 17 - 23, 1947



Saturday, May 17, 1947

Cleaned shed chamber. Sunny. We washed after supper. Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis here for dinner.



Sunday, May 18, 1947

I finished the shed chamber. It rained, no one here. Billie’s Chet cow had her calf. It came wrong way. Her legs very bad. Turned heifers over to Will Seavy’s pasture today.



Monday, May 19, 1947

Fair and warm. We washed. Aunt Ava ironed. Uncle Lewis and I went to town and Betty in PM. I washed upstairs curtains.



Tuesday, May 20, 1947

Rained. Bill home. Aunt Ava and I went over to Blanches. Uncle Lewis sick. Calf’s legs are better.



Wednesday, May 21, 1947

Fair. We did Blanches washing. Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis went. We ironed in PM. Papa down, he is sick.



Thursday, May 22, 1947

It rained. Bill home in PM, we got the barn cleaned out and ready to put (?) down. A load of shavings came. Dorothea got her scout uniform.



Friday, May 23, 1947

Very nice day. I began cleaning upstairs. Billie up to Chet’s to work. Papa came down, feet swollen.
