The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 11 - 17, 1947



Saturday, January 11, 1947

Bill and I went to town in a.m. It snowed a little. Hayd and Bill started the car. Billie had tooth out.



Sunday, January 12, 1947

Nice day. We washed and worked all day. Bill and Billie put wallboard on tie up. Fern and Lloyd, Bob and kids called. Billie’s tooth bad tonight.



Monday, January 13, 1947

We washed. Mama went down to Ferns. Bill and I down to town and got groceries. We called to see Brud. He went back to Portland tonight. We called at Alby’s.



Tuesday, January 14, 1947

Les did come today. They hauled two loads of logs out of here today. Goden home today. He and Sally called. Billie still home.



Wednesday, January 15, 1947

A very bad rain. No school. Del and Phyllis took Wayne to the hospital today in the ambulance. Appendicitis.



Thursday, January 16, 1947

Cloudy. They hauled logs from here today. I washed. Smart kids down.

Friday, January 17, 1947

They finished hauling our logs and begun on Raymonds. Very nice day. I washed windows and ironed. Billie over to Harrison tonight to see Jim Small’s show.
