The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 7 - 13, 1946 Meat, Meat and More Meat!



Saturday, December 7, 1946

Coal strike ended. Bill home and cut wood. Billie up to Chet’s. We did regular work. Bill and I to town in eve.



Sunday, December 8, 1946

Cloudy. Billie didn’t work. He and Bill hauled wood. Also sawed wood with Ilan using Mr. Randall’s tractor. Hayd called.



Monday, December 9, 1946

Rained hard all day. Bill didn’t work. Billie home with a bad eye. We washed. Billie to show in eve. Courage of Lassie. Merton Kimball killed our bull.



Tuesday, December 10, 1946

Cloudy and very warm. Mert brought the bull back. We did regular work. Billie didn’t go to school. Bill worked.



Wednesday, December 11, 1946

Clearing still not cold. Canned meat, made corned beef. Bill stayed at home and took care of meat. Billie still at home.



Thursday, December 12, 1946

Auntie up here. Cold. Ivory Purington came to see Bill. Billie to school.



Friday, December 13, 1946

We did big wash. Don Ridlon got killed today in an auto accident. Fern and Lloyd up in eve.
