The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 7 -11, 1955



Wednesday, December 7, 1955

Nice day. Got Christmas order off. Went to town before supper. Dorothea glad to be home.



Thursday, December 8, 1955

Dorothea, Dolores and I went over to Norway. Dorothea got a job in shoe shop. We did a little shopping over there. Fern up this p.m. Dorothea decorated house for Christmas, looks so nice.

Friday, December 9, 1955

Nice day but still awful cold. I spent the day up to Aunt Ava’s. Dorothea over to Norway with Barb in a.m. Cooked in p.m. Chet had bad spell. Billie did chores for him.



Saturday, December 10, 1955

Did up the housework. D. made Christmas cookies. Kids and I went down and got the Christmas tree. Betty decorated it. Dorothea made wreaths. D and I went to town in eve.



Sunday, December 11, 1955

A very nice day, still cold. Bill, Bet and Dot all went up to Brud’s  at Stoneham, Mass. for Dorothea’s things. Fern, Lloyd called in p.m. I cleaned up the house. Washed floors, cooked. Backed a few Christmas cards.

  1. Can you say 'tacky' ? That is some 'fireplace' !!!!!! Linoleum and wallpaper, no match. Oh Dear.....not out of Better Homes and Garden....!!!
