The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 6 - 10, 1955



Thursday, October 6, 1955

Cloudy. They began to cut down back here today. I cleaned upstairs for the wk. In p.m. Milan, Aunt Ava, Betty and I took Os Abbott home. Began to rain in p.m. Milan went to Portland and got Norma. Mrs. Cox died about 11 AM today.



Friday, October 7, 1955

Raining hard. Milan and I went to town and done shopping. My check came from Lida. Went down to Barb and got Dorothea shoes.



Saturday, October 8, 1955

Raining by showers. Milan and Norma left this forenoon. Dolores up for a call. Bill, Betty and I went to Fryeburg Fair in p.m. Fern and Lloyd over there too.



Sunday, October 9, 1955

Cold and rainy. Billie helped Bill Ridlon. Minnie (?) And Ervin Linscott to move some Whitehead cattle from the Brigham farm to the George Keen farm. Billie boarded up the barn cellar. Bill didn’t do much. I wrote letters, got dinner.



Monday, October 10, 1955 playpen

Very nice warm day. I washed and churned. Cleaned out the play pen. Kids here after school to ride, Lowell twins also. Donnie quite sick today. I mailed Dorothea shoes to her.
