The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 7 - 13, 1944

Saturday, October 7, 1944

A terribly hot day. Bill, Dorothea, and I went to town. Ran out of gas. Went up to Ferns and got Esther. She’s staying all night with us. A terribly dry shower. Louis Crosby’s house struck and burned out.

Sunday, October 8, 1944

Cloudy day after the showers last night. We found Don the horse dead in the pasture this morning, death caused by the shower we think. Bill and Billie buried Don and took care of the calf.

Monday, October 9, 1944

Cloudy. A sent for Billie’s shorts. Bill cut the two trees over by the shop. I washed and ironed, went up to Minnie’s, and two kittens died. Churned 6 ½ pounds of butter.

Tuesday, October 10, 1944

Mama made Betty Louise a new dress. Did regular work.

Wednesday, October 11, 1944

Wash today. We got word today that George Crook is missing.

Thursday, October 12, 1944

We went over to Norway. Blanche up, we made 8 pounds of butter. Nice day.

Friday, October 13, 1944

Cleaned up the house. Cooked and called on Minnie’s in eve.
