The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 21 - 27, 1944 Finished The Well



Saturday, October 21, 1944

Fern and Es arrived in Cleveland this noon okay. An awful rainy day. Bill went to town. Billie down in eve. Paid $40 on taxes. Fern’s birthday.



Sunday, October 22, 1944

FINISH STONING THE WELL. Charlie and Jean called in morning. Blanche and Dot called an afternoon. Mama and Lloyd called in. Was nice day but very cold.

Monday, October 23, 1944

I washed. Called on Minnie, Nancy Smart began school. Nice day.? Bennett and Bill hauled a few more rocks.



Tuesday, October 24, 1944

Our new rug for the front bedroom came today from Sears. Bill applied for his sawing machine, gasoline and his gas B book. Rationing gas etc.



Wednesday, October 25, 1944

Rained all day. Did regular work. Shampooed my hair. MacArthur made great gains in the Philippines.



Thursday, October 26, 1944

Cloudy. I washed, went up to Minnie’s in the afternoon. No school teachers convention.



Friday, October 27, 1944

No school. I cleaned up the house. Val down in eve. We made a little fudge.
