The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Saturday, November 11, 1944

Blanche and Joy up in p.m. Kennie, Bill, Bob , Rayburn, Ronnie, and Billie went hunting down back hunting. And Raymond. Nice day. Robert sick.



Sunday, November 12, 1944

Fern and Lloyd up in late p.m. Dorothea popped corn in p.m.



Monday, November 13, 1944

Bill and I went to town got our first ton of coal. Also got stone for furnace. Dolores up in p.m. Jean called. (Jean got a letter from her father. George was over Warsaw Poland when he got lost).



Tuesday, November 14, 1944

Bill began to work on the furnace. Kennard called in p.m. I ordered flooring, three storm windows and one combination door of L.C. Andrews. Sawdust came.



Wednesday, November 15, 1944

A very nice day. Bill still working on furnace. Blanche called in p.m. I went up to Minnie’s in eve.



Thursday, November 16, 1944

Started the coal fire down in cellar. Cloudy and rain tonight. Billie gone to movies to see Woodrow Wilson’s life picture.



Friday, November 17, 1944

Washed, churned, and did regular work. Oh yes we washed all the storm windows.
