The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Saturday, July 29, 1944

We went to town. Got a croquet set for Dorothea’s birthday. Rained all day.

Dorothea Jean Crook - 1940 Age 3-4. Fern made her Scottish suit for her.


Sunday, July 30, 1944

Bill home. Billie and Bill went and got the heifers over to Lee Grays pasture. Mama up to Uncle Willis with Aunt Ava. Set up Dorothea’s croquet set.


Monday, July 31, 1944

Bill and I walked down through the woods. Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis here for supper. Kennard and Dolores moved in today.


Tuesday, August 1, 1944

Nice day. Went up to Dolores. Minnie and kids down in eve. Kennard and Dolores and puppy down in evening.



Wednesday, August 2, 1944

Hot all day. Went up to Minnie’s tonight. Mama and Blanche with kids went to Norway.



Thursday, August 3, 1944

Bill and I went down to Dolores & Jeans today. Awful hot. We went to Pike’s today. Paid Papa off his share of the farm. Bill didn’t work.



Friday, August 4, 1944

Hot again today. Didn’t do much today. Papa went away tonight.
