The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Saturday, October 14, 1944

Went to town. It rained hard. Esther came up with us for the weekend.



October 15-19, 1944

Esther here and was run ragged with two girls. Heck of a  good time had by all.



Sunday, October 15, 1944

Cold nice day tho. Bill, Billie, Brud and Hayd Smart stoned the well up about 10 feet. Will finish it soon. Esther still here.



Monday, October 16, 1944

Did big wash. Blanche came up and got Esther this forenoon. Nice day.



Tuesday, October 17, 1944

Wonderful day. I cooked. Mama made Betty Louise three new dresses. Dorothea down to Ferns with Fern and Esther.



Wednesday, October 18, 1944

Our wedding anniversary and Bills father’s birthday. Bill remembered me with a very good box of chocolates. Mama went down to Lloyd’s. Bill bought inlaid at Woodford’s hardware for the kitchen.



Thursday, October 19, 1944

Fern went to Ohio. Esther went home today. Nice day windy. Bill and? Bennett’s hauled rocks for the well.



Friday, October 20, 1944

Bill and Bennett hauled some more rocks for the well. Invaded Philippines MacArthur’s work. Nice smart man.
