The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

A very nice sunny day. I washed, packed away clothes. Went down to Betty’s. Bill and Carmen glad to get home. Tonight we went to a baby shower at Joy’s for Debbie.

 

 

 

Saturday, July 18, 1981

 

Partly cloudy day mostly sunny in the morning. I changed beds. Cleaned up the house. Made rolls, baked beans and two Apple pies. Bill didn’t do much, he went up to Dorothea’s. Billie trimmed his pasture and Walt’s. Weldon called. Kim, Zak and Carmen up in PM. Carmen worked with Dorothea and Joy at the cottages today.

Cloudy some, in PM it was cleared. Cleared mostly in PM. I done up regular work then we picked some string beans. Fern came up in PM, here for supper. Betty’s folks up to the camp lot most of the day.

 

 

 

Monday, July 20, 1981 Walt’s birthday

 

This is been a very rainy day, misty toward night, the rain came down hard all evening, it has rained. I done up regular work then I got supper. Didn’t do much. Betty and kids called. Dorothea came, she and I went over to Susan’s to see about the dog and cats. One cat hurt her foot. Bill or Billie didn’t do much either. Betty and kids called with pizza, lobster rolls and meatball roll. They and Bill had lunch here.

July 14 - 16, 1981 Susan and Kids Fly Off and Carmen and Poppa Fly In

Tuesday, July 14, 1981 SUSAN AND KIDS LEFT

 

A mixed day sun, cloudy, showery. Up early this morning. Got ready, called Susan and Dorothea. Dorothea came a little before six. We went over to Susan’s and got them ready and left for the airport “Portland jet port” got them there and off on time for Florida to visit with her father and mother. Dorothea and I got home at about 9:30. I picked some string beans, cleaned up the house etc. Kim went home with Betty to work on her trunk. Wanted to get it done before Carmen comes home. Zak had company last night and today.

A very nice day. I have been busy. I done my hair. We picked some vegetables, string beans. I done a lot of work today.

 

 

Thursday, July 16, 1981 BILL AND CARMEN ARRIVED HOME TONIGHT ALL SAFE AND SOUND

 


 

A quite nice day. I did a dite of washing. Cleaned up the house and got ready and watched soaps then at 4:30 we went to the airport to meet the plane bringing Carmen and Bill. When we came home we went right down to Betty’s for welcoming. Kim made a beautiful welcome home cake. Bill and Carmen were very tired. All talked and listen to all the wild tales. We came home and got to bed at about 11:30.

Friday, July 10, 1981 A VERY NICE DAY, Mowed David’s Hay

 

I got up and got my work done up. Then I did a dite of wash. I ironed, washed woodwork, worked in kitchen. I did a dite of cooking, cake, custard. I washed floors. Then I got my greens ready for dinner. Fern came about 2 PM. Thena didn’t get here until quite late. We enjoyed having them here, they enjoyed the dinner very much. Cold sliced corned beef. It was corned to perfection. Swiss chard, cukes, mashed potatoes, hot all bran muffins. Custard and cake. They all liked it very much. Talk some more after supper than Thena went home. Betty came, she did my dishes. Mowed David’s hay today. Butch took his two black heifers this morning.

 

 

 

Saturday, July 11, 1981 DAVID’S HAY ALL IN

 

A very nice day, much less humidity. It was very windy though and that dries the garden out so much. Today they got David’s hay all in. It is very good hay too. Betty and Walt, Billie, Kim and Zak all helped. Betty didn’t but she and I sat on the porch with Dorothea then Dorothea had to go to work at four.

It was quite a nice day, sunny. I dite on the humid. I done up regular work. Got a lot of reading caught up. Zak here until about 4:30. Then Kim came up, she is here for tonight and tomorrow night. We picked a good mess of peas. Kim came up and she and I, Billie picked peas.

Well it is been a cloudy day and rain. I done my wash, dried it all in the dryer. My dresses came from Sears, too big. Kim here tonight.

Monday, July 6, 1981 CARDS FROM SCOTLAND

 

It was raining when we got up. It cleared then I did my wash. Froze some beet greens. We got the living room cleaned out so to have the rug cleaned. They came tonight and cleaned up. The vet was supposed to come but didn’t. The calf got sick. Dorothea called in evening. Today everyone got cards from Scotland.

 

 

 

Tuesday, July 7, 1981 Vet came

 

A very nice day. I done up the work, went down to Betty’s. I came home and froze some Swiss chard greens, made a salad for supper. I watched soaps programs. We settled the living room, the floor looks so nice. Finally the vet came, the calf had a 103.5 temperature. Heidi has a tumor. Cow is all right, they don’t know what her problem is.

 

 

 

Wednesday, July 8, 1981 FIRST MESS OF PEAS

 

A very hot. The wind blew all day and that was a relief from the extra heat. I done work. Went to town with Betty in a.m. I picked first mess of peas. I been busy all day, had a light supper. Billie harrowed garden (Rototiller) pulled weeds, Betty mowed the big lawn. Dorothea called in evening.

 

 

 

Thursday, July 9, 1981 HOT

 

Another very hot day. No wind like yesterday. So was much hotter. I got up early. I got my meat on to boil. I defrosted refrigerator. I did a wash. Got ready, went to town. Didn’t get home very early. I took care of the things, changed clothes, watched programs. Betty back out of joint again today. I got greens for supper. Bill Ridlon’s funeral. Late showers tonight after supper and a nice rain for the garden.

July 2 - 5, 1981 Forth of July at Camp

Today we got the increase in our checks. I am very pleased and it helps a lot. I went to town to shop. Came home, done rest of work and watched programs. Billie trimmed lawns.

 

 

 

Friday, July 3, 1981

 

 

 

It was cloudy in a.m. but it cleared later in PM. I got ready, and had Susan over for a steak cookout which they enjoyed so much. I had Fern up too. She liked the dinner. Keith came to spend the evening. He stayed till very late, 1:30. Also Dorothea was coming from Carries’s late, she saw the lights on so she called in, it was very late when we got to bed. Billie done mowing of lawns.

Mostly cloudy day, no rain, some sun. I done my work up, it was late. I washed kitchen floor. Took a bath, went up to Dorothea’s to help her. Didn’t do much. I stayed a little while, she had quite a few, but no one bought anything. I came home, washed a few things that I went out and sat on the porch. Billie did not feel very good. Fern called, she was lonesome and feeling sorry for herself. So Billie went down and got her, she came up here for supper. Then after supper we drove up to the camp lot. They all were coming home. Billie mowed some of the pasture.
