The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 22 - 25, 1975


Friday, August 22, 1975 PULLETS

A quite nice day. I was down to Betty’s. She, the kids and I cleaned up her house in a.m. In p.m. Bill, Billie, Betty, Zak and I went and got the pullets at Allan Metcalf’s in South Hiram. We had 10, Betty got 15 Sex Links. Then Betty and I came home, went shopping.



Saturday, August 23, 1975

A very nice sunny day, windy and kind of cold. A beautiful day. I got up early, got my cooking done. Got beans in, done up the work, washed and waxed floor. Betty came up about 12:30 or one. We expected Dorothea. She didn’t come until about seven. She and Dave then made a nice long visit. We had some fresh vegetables for them. Betty, Zak and I down town. They had the Olin bike race today. Billie busy all day as usual.



Sunday, August 24, 1975

A dreary miserable day. Rained. I done some jobs, ironed etc. Kim here all day. Had steak supper. No one here all day. Just not much to write. We are grateful for this rain. It was very dry.



Monday, August 25, 1975 Robert hospital

A rainy day. We need the rain. I done up my regular work. Went down to Betty’s. She, kids and I all looked at snapshots. Her albums are very nice. All in order according to years ages etc. Well protected. She done a very good job. In p.m. I went to Mechanic Falls with them to take Carmen to the dentist. Her teeth are all fixed up now. Robert in hospital again, he had hard work to breathe.

Monday, August 18, 1975

Cloudy and foggy when we got up. It cleared off nice and sunny. Quite warm. Carmen came up and stayed all day and to supper. We or she made some good cookies. Bill made Dorothea a set of doorsteps.



Tuesday, August 19, 1975

A nice day, not so hot. I done regular work. Zak here for breakfast. He was here all day. Betty to meeting in a.m. and made pickles in p.m. Kimmy had company, Laurie Smith. Carmen and Zenya rode horseback. I did a dite of cooking.

Wednesday, August 20, 1975

A very nice clear cool day. On the quite cool side, some wind occasionally. I didn’t do much, Zak here. Betty and girls down to Dawn’s. Betty bought me a new toaster which I am very glad of. Billie done some odds and end jobs, he gave the little CALF a shot, he has cold. Billie went with Lawrence and Butch to get a stove for Lawrence. Bill and I went for a short ride after supper.

Another beautiful day. I done up my work. I washed, went down to Betty’s. Billie worked at Joe’s. The cow and heifer were bred today.

August 15 - 17, 1975


Friday, August 15, 1975 Billie’s first day at home

A nice day, not too hot but very comfortable. Betty and Zak up for breakfast. I done up my work. Then I put my clothes out and then I went to town with Betty. Carmen, Kim and Zak and Esther and Vince went to Penneys. Esther bought some school clothes. In p.m. we picked Betty’s shell beans and froze them. Fern came up and helped. Came home, got supper done up, dishes. Betty and kids called. Billie and Zak tried out the new car then Betty, Kim, Zak and I. Kimmy help me get the clothes in. Betty bought some more or rest of the school clothes.



Saturday, August 16, 1975 DENNIS and Girlfriend at Dorothea’s

A nice sunny day, not too hot. I done my regular wook, washed floors. Kimmy up here, she helped. Then she, Bill and I went down to Dorothea’s. We got Carmen’s bike and brought it home. We saw DENNIS. He was there with a girlfriend. Came home. Fern was here. She and Billie had the shell beans all picked and shelled. I canned and froze them.



Sunday, August 17, 1975

Partly cloudy, some sun. I done regular work. I changed the beds. I defrosted refrigerator, did a lot of mending. Billie done a few things. In p.m. he went up to Chet’s. Bill didn’t do much. Keith Bryant called and Ilan. Fern, Lloyd in p.m. and the Hortons in evening. Fern and Lloyd went to the dedication of the new church. The Christian Missionary Alliance Church. The first part was built to 1970, this is the second part. It is a very nice pretty church. The service was very good.

Monday, August 11, 1975 HORSES GOT OUT

Another nice day, hot but not unbearable. I done my regular work, washed out a few things. Betty, kids and I up to North Conway, got a few school things. We done some grocery shopping. Came home, got supper. Betty and I called on Fern. Poor Joy is all upset. I feel so sorry for her. Early this morning, 4:30 AM, the horses got out and went way to the corner. Owen’s family caught them and brought them home.



Tuesday, August 12, 1975

Quite hot today. I did a little washing. Zak up here in a.m. Betty to the coffee group meeting. Carmen and Kim stayed at home and done up the work. In p.m. I picked some beans and other vegetables. Joy called in p.m. to sign the papers for the car etc.



Wednesday, August 13, 1975 JOY AND GIRLS LEFT, BILL GOT HIS NEW CAR

Quite hot. Joy and her four girls left for Bermuda. Betty took them to Portland to get the plane. I went with them. Dorothea went also. Dorothea went home after they left here. Betty, kids and I to McDonald’s for breakfast. Then out to the Maine Mall shopping for school clothes. It was a long hard day at work. I enjoyed it. It was hectic coming home. Carmen and Kim were good all day. Zak was very active. Bill got his new car today from Joy. A 197? Rebel, a branch of the Rambler. Very good car. Jade green and a black vinyl top. Plush seats in very good condition.



Thursday, August 14, 1975 BILLIE OUT OF WORK

A nice day. I done up my work. I went down to Betty’s, we cleaned the kids closets and put away all the new clothes. Worked till noon. Came home, got dinner then in p.m. I picked shell beans. Susan and Esther called and the children. Susan is looking for a place to live. In evening we went down to Lorraine’s for a baby shower for Wanda. Had a good time and she got a lot of nice things. Dorothea came up and called on us after the shower. Tonight Billie is out of work for a long time. Joe didn’t do well in his business.

August 8 - 10, 1975


Friday, August 8, 1975

It rained when we got up this morning and rained about all night. About 10 o’clock it cleared and got quite hot. I done my work up. Then we went to a few barn sales in a.m. Came home, ate a bite and Bill went with us and we went to a few more garage and barn sales. Bill went too. He enjoyed it. We got a bike today for Vince. Esther paid for it.



Saturday, August 9, 1975 very nice clear and warm

A beautiful day. Nice and sunny. I done some cooking, bread, rolls, cookies, cake and baked some white beans. At suppertime we went down to Betty’s and all ate together. David came up to the garage, he ate with us and seemed to enjoy it all. We had a good time. They brought Tulip up here tonight. David got some vegetables to take home. Joy and her Uncle Wendell and kids called. It is Blanche’s brother. Laurie is staying with Carmen till they get ready to go.



Sunday, August 10, 1975 Hotter

A very nice and sunny day. I done up my regular work. I washed, cleaned the house up. Billie and I cleaned the kitchen screens. Billie went with Lawrence picking up cattle. Betty called, kids came up for a little while. Betty, Walt and children entertained at a cookout. Their guests were Dawn, Ed, Dawn’s two brothers and their children. They had a good time. I’m glad at last they had someone except the Crooks, Yates and Thomases and Demings. Esther over in evening. Cliff down to Naples to the band concert, he played with the B band.
