The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Tuesday, April 14, 1964

Rained hard all day. Done up regular work, made some brownies. Betty and I cleaned and rearranged dark bedroom. Pack Mama’s clothes in boxes. It doesn’t seem possible she has gone. I miss her more and more. Betty and I took Carmen to Dr. Richards, her eyes are swollen. Infection he said. We called at Ferns. Kennard called today. Cow seems better. Phil had 2 quarts milk.

It was cloudy and dreary. I cleaned Bills room. Cow is gaining in milk.

A very nice day. I cleaned my room. Fern up for supper and evening.

A very nice day. I finished cleaning the upstairs. Betty away tonight.

Dorothea and I upstairs working in the shed chamber. Betty, Louise and Roland Valley worked in Carmen’s room. Betty mad all day long. Dorothea said probably her fault. Kennard called a little while. Fern up here tonight. Dorothea over to Aunt Ava’s. Betty to town. Snow went some today.





Saturday, April 11, 1964 DOROTHEA LEFT

Today Dorothea left to go home. I hated so much to see her go. It was a nice spring day. Blanche went with us. Bill was going, he fixed ceiling in the bathroom and little hallway. Cows still not good, can’t use her milk yet. Carmen awfully tired tonight. Called to see Steve Morgan today. Snow went a lot today.



Sunday, April 12, 1964

Well I feel so sorry for Dorothea. She was sick at heart when she left and when she called last night. I know something was bothering her. It was hard for her to leave. Betty and I to town. Bill and Betty papered bathroom and hallway. Fern, Lloyd, Kennie, Dot, Aunt Ava, Bob, Blanche and Kennard called. Dolores’s sister-in-law died. Bill goes to Scotland in fall. September Bill and I go to Scotland.

Fair, on the raw windy side. Roland and Louise came up, they with Betty done some target practicing. Aunt Ava called???? Betty and I did a big wash and we done the ironing after supper. The cow better tonight. Gave a little more milk. Bill painted hallway and bathroom.

April 6 - 9, 1964



Monday, April 6, 1964

Fair. Today went to town. Done some business in p.m. Betty and I to Portland and done some business, came home, had supper. Dorothea cleaned up the whole house, rearranged furniture in living room. She made that room look a lot better. In evening we looked over some of Mama’s things and then Dorothea and Betty down town. Done the washing at laundromat. Called at Barbara’s. Betty bought her a new bedroom set.



Tuesday, April 7, 1964

Cloudy and stormy all day. We done just regular work. Kind of relaxed. In p.m. Kennard, Fern, Lloyd, Aunt Ava called also Mr. Lackee. Dorothea and Blanche to Portland. Tonight we moved Mama’s bed upstairs and Bill began working in her room getting it ready to be redecorated. Dorothea and Betty over to Blanche’s after supper.



Wednesday, April 8, 1964

RAIN RAIN RAIN. I finally got all my thank you cards off and all things done. Also got Esther’s letter off. In p.m. Dorothea, Blanche and I down to the Cemetery. Came home, cleaned, painted in bedroom. Betty started the painting. We got supper. After supper Betty’s new bedroom set came. We all like it very much and she is so pleased about it. She worked up there all evening. Dorothea and I down town in evening. Then Dorothea down to Barb’s in evening.



Thursday, April 9, 1964

A nice day. Betty had Roland and Louise up here and they papered and finished painting Carmen’s room. Here for lunch and supper. In evening Bill, Dorothea and I out for a little while. Called at Ferns. Mama has been gone one week today. I miss her so much.

April 2 - 5, 1964 Allie M. Smith Died



Thursday, April 2, 1964 MAMMA

Mama went today. Blanche called me at 3:45 AM, said Mama wasn’t very good. She was filled up and had difficulty breathing. Call Dr. Bishenoffberger at 4 AM. Mama lingered on until 12:30 and then the end was near. At 1:25 PM she breathed her last. Kennard, Delores, Kennie, Dot, Fern, Lloyd, Aunt Ava, Blanche and Bob, Bill and I all were here. May God bless her and give her eternal happiness. We will always miss you. I lost someone today that no one ever can take her place.





Friday, April 3, 1964

Rain and snow. Dorothea, Betty and Carmen came today or late p.m. Milan and family came in late evening. We all went to the funeral parlor today and evening to visit with Mama. She looks so nice and really looked much younger. Her suffering is at end now. We all will remember her as she has been through life. It was nice seeing Dorothea again after over one year. Also Betty and Carmen. Fern up here, brought up supper etc. and worked.




Saturday, April 4, 1964 MAMMA’S FUNERAL

It cleared nice today, on the cool windy side. Funeral of Allie M. Smith at 2 PM. The funeral services of Allie Smith began. It was a sad sad affair for all of her family. She had a nice burial. Is happy. Came home, Harold Virgin and wife, Muriel and husband, Milan’s folks, Fern and Lloyd, Kennie, Dot, Wanda and Lorraine here. We had coffee and cake. Later had I baked beans supper. It don’t seem possible she is gone. I miss her so much, always will.

Carmen 14 months today. A beautiful day except cool. We just more or less relaxed all day. Billie didn’t get home till morning. Blanche here, Betty, Dorothea, Carmen and I and Blanche went to get Dorothea suitcase at Portland Municipal Airport. Came home. Fern and Lloyd came up. Milan and family, Dorothea, Betty all over to Bob’s and Aunt Ava’s.

Cloudy and gray all forenoon. Sun came out in p.m. Done up the work. Cooked a nice ham supper. Bob here for supper. Fern and Lloyd here. Kennie, Dot here. Bob called, he was here for supper. Art Ward’s family here in p.m. Mama not good at all. It is so hard to see her this way.



Monday, March 30, 1964

A nice day, not too cold. We washed and got the ironing done. Aunt Ava called. Fern and Lloyd called. Kennard and Delores called. Mama real bad today, bad pain.



Tuesday, March 31, 1964

Cold. Cold and windy all day, we washed twice today for Mama. She is in terrible pain now, very weak and pitiful looking. Kennard called. Aunt Ava called. They all feel bad to see Mama look so bad. It is hard. I cleaned some dresser draws today. A phone call from my daughters last night, all is well, so far they are having a gay time.

We cooked, washed and worked with Mama a lot. She is very very weak. Kennard and Delores called.
