The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 25 - 28 1962



Wednesday, April 25, 1962

About 22 this morning. This morning when we got up the ground was all white with snow again. I cleaned and painted the kitchen cupboards. Also I got my chambers all cleaned up again. In evening Billie and Wendell Bradley went smelting. Tonight I got a phone call from Betty. Mike left this morning to go back to the base for two weeks. Betty is left alone, got to move all alone, no car no money. If only I could go to help her. Will send her money tomorrow. Billie helped Webb Carlton move. Old Las is okay.



Thursday, April 26, 1962

20 above, cold. Cloudy and stormy (snow) this morning. This morning I went to town with Lloyd to send money to Betty. $30. She needs it so bad. She is moving. I hope it got there in time. I have worried about her all day. I’ll be so glad when she gets home and Mike. Mike is out in the field. Billie and Wendell went smelting again tonight. Bill worked at Gordon’s again.



Friday, April 27, 1962

34 above. Warm this morning, foggy. But soon cleared away. A very hot day. I cleaned the stove in the kitchen, began to paint. Went to town in evening. We had a bad thunder shower.



Saturday, April 28, 1962

Cloudy, not so warm. I painted rest of the kitchen. In a.m. Billie and I to town to get the wallpaper for the kitchen. In PM Bill down to Gordon’s. Billie hauled HAY from Gordon Brill’s. Lloyd called. Herbert Allen had a bad heart attack today. Kennard came up to get water. Billie gone up country was some guys smelting. No letter from Betty.

April 21 - 24, 1962



Saturday, April 21, 1962 Lassie very Sick

A very nice day. I baked beans, made bread, a cornflake pudding. Bill finished painting kitchen ceiling. Kennard called. Also Carlton, he has come up to get Dolores. Milan’s folks over to Fryeburg. In evening Fern up here. Milan’s folks off again after supper. Lassie very sick. She stayed down across the road in the woods.



Sunday, April 22, 1962 Easter

Partly cloudy but very warm. I got the work done up. Frosted a cake, got my salad made, got dinner. Milan and family and David Nevers here for dinner. Bill down to Gordon’s all day again. Billie finished raking. Lassie better. Kennie and Dot came up.



Monday, April 23, 1962

Sunny warm. I went to Portland with Lorraine and Dot. Dot went to the hospital for observation. Lassie somewhat better.



Tuesday, April 24, 1962

Very windy. But sunny. I churned. Cooked. Kennard called. I cleaned cupboards and draws. Got letter from (?) I washed. I done my ironing in living room after supper. Bill down to Gordon’s in evening. Lassie seems a bit better. Cold. It was so cold hanging out my clothes.

April 17 - 20, 1962



Tuesday, April 17, 1962

Cold cold. Dolores called in a.m. I finished up the cleaning upstairs. It looks very nice. I began working upstairs March 21. In PM I roasted pork, made a blueberry pie. After supper Billie and I went down to see Horace Flint at the funeral parlor. Aunt Ava called in PM. In evening Fern came up, stayed til Lloyd called for her at midnight.



Wednesday, April 18, 1962

No letter from Bet and Mike. I don’t see what the trouble can be. I didn’t do much today. I churned, done up the regular work. Mama stayed in bed today. Tonight Bill and Billie raked rest of front lawn. Began on it before the storm last weekend. Bill sowed down the pasture tonight. Sowed grass seed.



Thursday, April 19, 1962

Been very busy. A nice warm day. I done up the work. Washed floors, windows, swept and dusted, clean cupboards, and made donuts and a cake, got supper. In evening I went over to June’s, got my rinse. LETTER from BETTY and MIKE. Billie and I stopped at Ferns. Came home, shampooed my hair, took a bath.

A very nice day. I didn’t do much today. Milan took me to town to get my groceries. Milan’s folks came about midnight last night. In evening Bill and I to town. Betty and Norma went too. Betty brought a nice box of chocolates. In evening we watched TV.

Friday, April 13, 1962

Cold and a horrible mess of snow. I worked upstairs. Varnished, painted, hope to get all done up there this weekend. We had about 5 inches of wet heavy snow, such a mess. To town after supper.



Saturday, April 14, 1962

A miserable cold day and this old snow. I baked beans, done some painting upstairs. I cooked. Dawn Parks and Janice called. I mailed a letter to Betty and Mike with some money in it. $15.



 
Sunday, April 15, 1962

A miserable day, cold and a mess of snow. I washed kitchen ceiling and the floor. Bill worked at Gordon’s all day. I got dinner, Kennie, Dot called, ate supper. Bob and Blanche called. Today in the a.m. Horace Flint shot himself with a 30:30 gun up there on the old Sam Ridlon place. Too bad. He had financial troubles.



Monday, April 16, 1962

Cold cold. No letter from Bet and Mike. I washed. Kennard called. Dot called, she is going to the hospital. I worked upstairs in PM.

April 9 - 12, 1962 Brand New Nash Rambler




Monday, April 9, 1962

A very nice day. I washed, clothes dried good. I cleaned up my downstairs, washed the floors. Fern and Lloyd called. We get a long letter from Betty and Mike. Also pictures of their pretty home. I got the clothes in after supper. Billie brought home a brand NEW NASH RAMBLER to try out to see if he wanted it. I cooked today.



Tuesday, April 10, 1962 BILLIE BOUGHT A BRAND NEW 1962 NASH RAMBLER

He traded with Roger McDonald, a light blue. He and I went up to Bob’s, called at Aunt Ava’s and at Ferns. Took her for a  ride and she came back and stayed here til Lloyd came at midnight. I painted the rest of the bathroom and my closet upstairs. I got a letter off to Betty.





Wednesday, April 11, 1962

Cold and windy. I washed my floor upstairs and painted it and the bathroom floor upstairs. It looks so nice. Dot Prescott called. And paid for the flowers. Mama went over to Aunt Ava’s for the day and stayed all night. Also we took our downstairs bathroom seat out, it run over and what a mess it was all clogged up.



Thursday, April 12, 1962

Cold again. I painted Bill’s bedroom floor. I varnish the door and casing at head of stairs. I ironed curtains and got them up in my room. I frosted a chocolate layer cake and decorated it, made a salad, cooked some Swiss steaks and had Ken and Dolores down for supper for Dolores’s supper (birthday). Also we had Fern up. Had a good time. Aunt Ava brought Mama home in PM. Billie took his license up to Allen’s.
