The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 8 - 13, 1959



Tuesday, December 8, 1959

A very nice day, on windy side. Dottie, Jeff and I went to Norway to get her pictures to send to Portland for her passports. We came home, done up rest of work, made two pies, salad, meatloaf etc. for supper. Betty brought the colt up in afternoon.



Wednesday, December 9, 1959

A very nice day. We washed in p.m. D. And I went to town. I got a pair of stockings. Paid a bill. Had 200 gallons oil come. Paid for last 200. Dorothea wrapped Christmas presents for Ma. Betty up to Irene’s babysitting. Jeff cunning. Billie paid all of his bills today.

Donald O. Ayres has been gone two years today. Dorothea, Jeff and I to town in a.m. to get groceries. Kennard called.

Another stormy weekend. Betty to Portland with Irene. Dorothea to Portland with Barb and Phil. I took care Barb’s boy Wesley, Dolly’s children and Jeff too.

Cold and windy. Cleared off today. Kennie and Dot called. Betty came home and brought the colt.

Friday, December 4, 1959

A very nice day. Dorothea and Jeff been down to Howard Conant’s and over to Barbs and Phils. Dorothea had her hair done. Rose and two boys called. Dorothea and Jeff over to get their pictures taken for Dennis’s Christmas. Betty down to Irene’s, they went down to Zayres tonight shopping. I got some groceries over to Norway at the IGA store when I went to Norway with D.



Saturday, December 5, 1959

Betty came home from Irene’s. Dorothea, Jeff and I downtown shopping and called at Conant’s. Dorothea over to Barbs in p.m. and evening. I took care of Jeff. He is so cute all the time. So glad he is here.



Sunday, December 6, 1959 Jeffrey Dennis Adair 17 months today

Cloudy in a.m. Done up the work. Ken, Dot, Edith, Judy and Raymond called. Bill worked at Jim’s. THE COLT CAME. HE IS SO CUTE. BETTY IS HAPPY.



Monday, December 7, 1959

A very rainy forenoon. Cleared about noon. Dorothea, Jeff with Barb, Wesley and myself went to Portland to do Dorothea’s business about her passport over to Fort Williams. Got hers and Jeff’s shots. Went back to Gary Conant’s, got Tonie (?) and Wesley got home about 6 o’clock.

Storm snowing. Worked all day. Kennie and Dot called, also Raymond was over and here for supper. Bill worked for Don Chadbourne today. Sure are having a good time with Jeff.



Monday, November 30, 1959

A nice day in a.m., but cold. I washed. Dot, Lorraine and Wanda Jean called. Also Barb and Wesley. Dorothea over to Barbra’s all day into evening. Very cold tonight.



Tuesday, December 1, 1959

A nice day. I got the clothes in and ironed. Dorothea made a batch of cookies in p.m., and in the evening some more to send to Dennis. Dr. Skillin came today to see Jeff. In late p.m. Dawn called with Betty. Dorothea bought some new wastebaskets and a sink drain and a plant pot.

A nice warm day. Jeff a lot better. We didn’t do much work. Dorothea had the car, she and I to town and called at Ferns.

November 24 - 28, 1959



Tuesday, November 24, 1959 Dorothea and Jeff came

Cloudy and rained. Today Blanche, Fern, Betty and I went to the Portland airport to meet Dorothea and Jeffrey. They came from Esther and Cliff’s after a three-week visit with them. They both looked so good to us.



Wednesday, November 25, 1959 Dorothea and Jeffrey here

Rain and cleared late tonight. I cooked all day. It sure is good having Dorothea and Jeffie here. He is so cute all the time.



Thursday, November 26, 1959 Thanksgiving

We had Dorothea and Jeffrey here today for Thanksgiving. Dorothea got a call from Denny, has called Dorothea tonight from London England. She is so excited and pleased. He was so homesick. I heard his voice too. We had a nice dinner. Roast turkey, roast pork, onions, squash, peas, gravies, mashed potato, cranberry sauce, rolls, Graham nut bread, salad, celery, pies, brownies, coffee and tea. A nice clear day. Kennard, Delores and Aunt Ava here and Lloyd. Dr. Nash went down to his sons home for the day.



Friday, November 27, 1959

The day after the holiday got the house straightened out, things back to normal. Jeff has an awful cold. He is so cunning just the same. Fern and Lloyd up in p.m. Jeff was so cute.

Cloudy and stormy. Bill worked all day. Billie, Dorothea and I went to town in p.m. Jeff is very cunning.

Today I have been busy as a whirlwind getting ready for Dorothea tomorrow. But tonight about 8:30 Esther called she isn’t coming till Tuesday. Because Mr. and Mrs. Adair are coming to Esther’s to visit Dorothea and Jeffrey. I’m glad they can see them again.

Today it has snowed. Bill, Betty and I were going to Portland to do some shopping, but it was too bad traveling. Bill and I to town in p.m. Betty typed a story she has written. Very good.
