The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

A very nice hot day. I washed. Kids all went swimming. Dolores called. Done ironing today. LETTER from Adair’s.



 


 Wednesday, July 22, 1959

A hot day. I churned. Worked all day. Kids swimming. Tired all out. Dr. Nash not feeling very well, he had his son come up and get him. He’s gone for a day or so.



Thursday, July 23, 1959

Another awful hot day. Kids at home all this forenoon. At noon time Bill took them to North Bridgton to go swimming. In evening they went over to Dawn’s mothers with her to swim. I cooked, washed, ironed etc. We canned some string beans. A VERY NICE BIG PHOTO FROM JEFFREY DENNIS ADAIR.

Today I cooked and churned. Kids swimming in p.m. and evening. Dr. Nash didn’t come back tonight. Bill, Norma, Pat and I to town in late p.m. Kennard called in p.m.

July 17 - 20, 1959 Norma Arrives For a Couple Weeks



Friday, July 17, 1959

Another nice hot day. I cooked, done up the work. Paul came and raked the hay. Bill and I to town, paid bills and got groceries. In evening Gordon Sanborn baled the hay and they got it all in. FINISHED HAYING



Saturday, July 18, 1959

Another hot sunny day. Milan and Norma came early this morning. Worked all day. Betty, Pat and Norma and Jeannie went swimming in p.m. Milan and Norma got run into by a deer on the way up here last night. Billie helping Raymond hay tonight. MIKE left today for Auburn. He will stay over there to Auburn with his father and going to Edward Little High.

Sunday, July 19, 1959

Hot. Milan up early this morning and left for home. Rest of us didn’t get up very early. Billie and Betty mowed lawns. Kids swimming this p.m. Showers in p.m. Raymond called.




Monday, July 20, 1959

Good in the first part of day. In late p.m. it clouded up and rained. I washed, got the clothes dried. Kids all went swimming. In evening I done up the ironing. Betty and Pat out babysitting. Billie sold his calf tonight to Davis Kimball.

Hot and muggy, East wind. Bill mowed lawns. Billie helped and picked berries. In p.m. Aunt Ava and I went to Mr. (?) Ferguslees and Nona Stuarts wedding.
 


Monday, July 13, 1959

A warm drying day. Clothes dried good. I washed, done up the work. Pat Sangilo came today for two weeks visit. Letter from…. (end of diary entry).



Tuesday, July 14, 1959

A nice day, not too much bright sunshine. I cooked, ironed. Betty and Pat up to Dawn’s, downtown in evening. Billie sent first car payment. Kennie called this morning. Kennard called in evening. Milan telephone tonight Norma Gay will come up this weekend.

 Wednesday, July 15, 1959 Allie Myrtle McKeen Smith’s birthday

Another cloudy East wind day. Mama up to Aunt Ava’s for her birthday. I didn’t do much except to churn and cooked a dite. Kids up to Dawn’s in a.m., to movies in p.m. Fern, Lloyd and Bob called in evening, also Aunt Ava stopped when she brought Mama home.



Thursday, July 16, 1959

I done up the regular work. Then I cleaned the whole house. Paul came and cut rest of the hay. Billie and I up to Rado’s to get Betty’s radio. He didn’t get it done, so we came home without it. Betty and Pat camping down by the brook tonight.

Wednesday, July 8, 1959 Begun Haying

A very nice hot day. I cleaned the whole house. In p.m. Paul Hodgdon came and mowed half the hay. In p.m. also a welfare worker came to see Dr. Nash. Fern and Lloyd called in evening.

Blanche called tonight. Joy gave birth to a 7 lbs. 1 oz. girl this morning. The name is Deborah Aleta. Cards from Deming’s, got home at about 9 PM yesterday, nice trip.



Thursday, July 9, 1959

A very nice day. I didn’t have much to do. I picked a few boxes of berries. In p.m. Paul and Erwin Hodgdon raked the hay. After supper Gordon Sanborn baled it. Then Raymond, Kennard came, they with Billie and Bill got it all in. Dolores came down and visited.



Friday, July 10, 1959

I picked some berries, got ready for town. Fern went with us. I stayed down and went to the movies. Raymond called in evening.



Saturday, July 11, 1959

It rained in the morning. Bill didn’t work. I did a little cooking. Mike came up today, he is home for a week. Betty and Mike went down town for me. In p.m., Billie went to Snow Village in New Hampshire with H. Flint. Dawn and George here for supper. Bill and Dr. Nash watched ballgame in p.m.
