The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 21 - 24, 1981 Christmas Eve At Nanny's

 

Monday, December 21, 1981

 

Well it was a very nice day. I got up early, did my washing and then I went down to Betty’s. She and I made the cornballs. She made her fudge and her pumpkin bread. I came home, washed my hair and put the rinse on it. Got supper to going, had a good supper. Carmen and Billie to Norway today. I ironed in PM.

 

 

 

Tuesday, December 22, 1981

 

When we got up it was cloudy then it began to snow. Then it cleared and a very nice day. I went down, got my hair set. Then I went, done my shopping. Came home, made a loaf of Graham nut bread and made sloppy Joe’s for supper. Betty came to town and got me. She has Fern there for the day to visit. Carmen came up this PM. She and Billie wrapped a gift.

 

 

 

Wednesday, December 23, 1981

 

I been busy all day. Cooking, cleaning, washing, ironing etc. Billie and Carmen to Norway. Also to Bridgton. Billie busy.

 

 

 

Thursday, December 24, 1981 A fair day

 

On the last stretch. I’ve been busy all day getting the house cleaned up, washed floors etc. Windows, made pies and rolls and bread. All came out fair. Then cooked a fish chowder for supper. No onion or potato. How did I forget to put it in. Quite disgusting. It would have been so good. Fern up for supper. Kim up in PM helping me to get things ready etc. Then after supper Kim came up and she helped to get the table set up with the snacks etc. They all came, we opened our gifts etc. We all got a very nice and useful gifts. Dorothea, Jeff, Dawn and Fern were here. Fern stayed all night.

December 18 - 20, 1981 Zak Made The Basketball Team

It has been a cloudy and snowy day. I done my washing. Then Betty came, we went to town. I picked up my clock radio I won. Went to the PROP, signed up for fuel assistance. Then we went to the bank. I came home, ironed, cleaned up the house. Carmen went with us. Bill plowed some.

 

 

 

Saturday, December 19, 1981 Zak made basketball team

 

A quite nice day. I changed the beds, swept, dusted, washed windows, made bread and rolls, a cake. Betty and Walt up, we, Betty and I made out the menu for Christmas dinner. Today Zak tried out for the basketball team. He made the team, is to play forward. I wish him the best of luck. I’m so anxious to see him play his first game January 9th. Billie went down to Limerick with Howard Millett. Joy and girls called on us.

 

 

 

Sunday, December 20, 1981 10 above

 

After some cloudiness this morning it cleared and became a beautiful day. Sunny and the sun made it nice and mild. It was a very cold night. Billie up early, with Howard Millett up to Groveton, New Hampshire. Howard is looking for calves. I done up my work. Then I made double batches of fudge, chocolate, brown sugar or penuche. Bill down town to get paper. Then he sat here all rest of the day, then he went up to Dorothea’s a little while. David called. Dorothea got stuck in snow this morning down by Walt’s driveway. The little calf is doing well, very pretty. Betty called a minute today.

December 15 - 17, 1981 Carmen Home From College

 


 





Tuesday, December 15, 1981 NO SCHOOL

 

Well we got snow and rain last night and snow so the traveling was dangerous so no school. I done my ironing early and I made a apple pie, cookies. I worked on Christmas cards, wrote letters to send with the cards. Bill and Billie in and out. Bill and Kim plowed snow. Billie shoveled here and at Fern’s.

 

 


 

Wednesday, December 16, 1981 NO SCHOOL, started furnace fire today

 

What a day, snow changed to rain then back to snow and heavy wind. I done up the regular work then I finished the cards, got some off. Then Betty came up and she wrapped up all the rest of the Christmas gifts. Kim came up to. I was glad she got them wrapped. Bill got his haircut today. Kim and Betty called, they brought the cards up, very good. Today Bill started the wood fire in the furnace.

 

 

 

Thursday, December 17, 1981 CALF BORN, CHRISTMAS TREE IN, CARMEN HOME

 

Well, it’s been quite a day. First we got some sun after bad cloudy weather. Today about 11:30 AM the Jersey, Ellie May, had her calf. A very pretty little heifer calf. Betty, Delores and I went to town. Billie washed the windows on the outside. They brought up a Christmas tree when we got home. I got the room ready and Bill brought the tree in. After supper Betty, Kim and Zak came up to decorate the tree. Then a big surprise. Carmen boomed in and it was a big surprise. We was so glad to see her. She has all her exams taken. Dorothea came later. I won a clock radio.

Another cloudy day. I’ve been busy all day. I washed the windows. I made a beef hash for supper. I vacuumed the whole house.

 

 

 

Saturday, December 12, 1981

 

At last it cleared off and it was a beautiful day. I done a lot of work. Made rolls, bread, baked some nice white beans. Zak up early for breakfast and watched his TV shows. I got my work done quite early. David called. Bill and Billie in and out.

 

 

 

Sunday, December 13, 1981

 

Well we had another very nice day. I got up about 7:30. Got the breakfast, done up the work. I wrote three letters, and written and some of the cards done. I’ll be glad to get them off. No one here today. Billie down to Fern’s. Bill down to town early to get cigarettes. Kim gone to a Christmas party at Debbie Woodbury’s house tonight.

 

 

 

Monday, December 14, 1981

 

A nice sunny day. It was on the cool side, not too bad though. Billie and I over to Norway to Christmas shop. He got rest of his done. I came home and cooked a steak supper. Clouded up in the PM, to start snowing tonight.

Monday, December 7, 1981 40 years ago today the attack on Pearl Harbor

 

Not a very good day. Dorothea and Bill took the car down to get it checked over and the winter tires put on. What a mess of snow from the bad storm of yesterday. Blizzard all day yesterday. Billie got stuck out here in the yard. I got my washing done.

I did the ironing. Rest of the work. I made a cake. Plowed snow, a lot of it.

 

 

 

Wednesday, December 9, 1981

 

A fair day. I done up the work. Made a lemon meringue pie, cake. Well Betty took Billie to the doctors in Portland today. The doctors said he has problems. First he has to get his sugar count down. So he is cut out his bad eating habits.

 

 

 

Thursday, December 10, 1981

 

Well it has been cloudy all day. It wasn’t too cold. Dorothea took Delores, Susan and me to town. I came home, done a lot of odd jobs. Billie cleaned the car and truck today. Bill went to Portland with Dorothea this PM. I went to the LRHS Christmas concert, it was very good. Kathy was in it.

Well, all kinds of weather. I done up my work, to town shopping. We had a lot of running around to do so we didn’t get home very early. I washed, got supper to going. Watched shows on TV. Bill’s license came today.

 

 

 

Friday, December 4, 1981

 

A nice day. I washed windows. I made a pie. Then I worked at my desk rest of the day. Got the bills already to go. Bill down to Betty’s most of the p.m. Billie in and out all day. Kim went to the basketball game tonight. She had a good time. She called on us in the evening. Betty called also. Then she went up to Joy’s. LRHS won again tonight.

 

 

 

Saturday, December 5, 1981 SNOW CAME TONIGHT

 

It was clear when we got up but it got cloudy. I have been busy all day. I got the cards off to Scotland. I changed the beds. Swept. Betty came up and David called and Zak came up, had breakfast. Watched TV for a while. I made rolls and a date filled pies. I washed the floors. The Spencer package came today.

 

 

 

 
 
 

 

Sunday, December 6, 1981 First Snow

 

Well this is been a bad day as for weather. Snowed and blowed all day. It was awful. This was the first snow storm of the year. I done up the regular work. In PM I wrapped gifts. Billie picked over some papers. Bill watched TV. A dreary day. Walt and Zak went to the dump. The wind blowed so hard the snow drifted in places. It snowed and blowed all night very hard.
