The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 8 - 11, 1978 Walter Grime's visits

Wednesday, November 8, 1978

 

Cloudy all day. I done regular work. We put some of the furniture back in living room, the rugs looks good. I did a wash. Bill had some dirt hauled in down to the spring. He leveled it off. Walt didn’t go to work today. He don’t look very good. It cleared off at about 4 PM.

 

 

 

Thursday, November 9, 1978

 

I went to town with Susan and Delores. We shopped for Fern also. Then I worked at Betty’s all rest of the day. Came home, got supper.

 

 

 

Friday, November 10, 1978 Walter Grimes

 

It was nice in a.m. but it got cloudy. I did a big wash. Cleaned up the house. I had a lot to do but in PM I went with Betty and the kids all up through West Paris etc. Saw Flicka’s father. Tonight Betty, Walt, Carmen and Kim all went and got Walter. He came for the weekend. He is a freshman at University of Maine in Orono. Zak came up here to stay all night.

Saturday, November 11, 1978 Veterans Day

 

Kind of a cloudy day. I done my regular work, washed windows, floors, changed all the beds, cooked. Zak watched TV all forenoon until after the wrestling was over. Billie over to Norway, got a haircut etc. Busy all day. Bill down to the camp little while. Kimmy came up. Fern up for supper and evening. Joy and Laurie called in evening.

A very nice day. I done my work. Got my floor washed and house all cleaned up. Went to the high school parade with Betty and Fern. It was very good. Carmen to the dance tonight.




 

 

 

 

Sunday, November 5, 1978

 

A nice sunny day, but very dry wells and all. I done my regular work. Down to Betty’s in PM. We washed storm windows and the outside. She and Walt put the storm windows on. We went over to greet Ilan on his birthday. Billie down to Fern’s and then away in PM. Kimmy went to see Ilan’s with us.

 

 

 

Monday, November 6, 1978

 

Foggy for a few hours in the morning, but it cleared away. I did a big wash. Bill worked on the boat. I was down to Betty’s after I got my wash done. We cleaned up out back some. Bill went down and cleaned up the gravel and raked up.

 

 

 

Tuesday, November 7, 1978 Walt to hospital Kidney Stones

 

It was cloudy today and it began to rain late in PM. Walt went to the hospital this morning. He was in terrible pain. They said he had kidney stones. He came home at night. Joy and I went to Shaw’s shopping all alone. We got Betty’s groceries. Today Dorothea came up and she cleaned her living room rug. She done a good job. She was here for supper

Another very nice sunny day. They finished hauling dirt for the barn of Walt’s. Bill helped in the forenoon. In PM Walt had a bulldozer come and level it all off. Halloween was exciting tonight for the kids. A lot of them called. Kimmy down town. Carmen came up here for a little while after supper.

 

 

 

Wednesday, November 1, 1978

 

A nice clear day. On the cold side. Betty and I took a walk down through the woods in a.m., 1st time we had been down there for many years. It is so pretty down there. Came home. I watched my programs. Bill and Billie finished the plowing and harrowing. Also sawed rest of the wood up to the shelter. I did a dite of wash. Billie not working until Monday. He is going to finish up all the odds and end jobs.

Thursday, November 2, 1978

 

A very nice sunny day. It is still very dry though. Need RAIN. I done up the work. Bill and I went to Norway to get a part for the car. Done a dite of shopping. Went to see Lloyd. Then had dinner at Barjo’s for the anniversary. A gift from the kids. Came home, down to Betty’s and done her chickens. Billie cleaned them out and put the new pullets in.

I got my work done early. Bill down to the camp in a.m. After mailman came Bill, Delores and I went to town. We went to Fern’s, got her money check etc. Done a lot of business. Checks came today.

A quite nice day, on the cold side. Delores, Susan and I went to town. I came home, put some clothes and other summer things away, washed curtains etc.

 

 

 

Saturday, October 28, 1978 Cow Bred

 

A very nice clear sunny day after the clouds cleared away. I done my regular work, washed floors, changed beds etc. Then we cleaned the breezeway, I washed, clothes dried good. Billie did a few odds and end jobs. Then went with Lawrence to get some cattle home from the pastures. Bill worked at Walt’s. They got the barn cellar ready for the dirt and cement.

 

 

 

Sunday, October 29, 1978

 

It dawned clear and cool this morning. On the windy side. I washed my garage and breezeway windows on the outside. Bill and Billie put the plows on and plowed some. David and Dorothea were up today. Margaret Clark called and brought the picture of the house over.

 

 

 

Monday, October 30, 1978 began hauling dirt for barn

 

A beautiful day. I done regular wash and work. I went down to Betty’s to see the barn. Fern was there. I helped Betty to do some odds and end jobs. We looked at the Bridgton book. Very interesting. Today Ronnie Robinson hauled dirt for the barn at Walt’s. Bill helped him as much as she could with the tractor.

Monday, October 23, 1978 MILKED

 

Well I did a big wash and cleaned my bedrooms and bathroom. We got a little rain shower. Betty washed my windows all on the outside. Bill worked on or built a couple of ramps out here in the garage for Betty Johnson’s place on the Lake. Fern did a dite of bowel movement today.

 

 

 

Tuesday, October 24, 1978 PERMANENT 1ST PULLET EGG

 

A beautiful day. I done up part of my work and did a big ironing. A dite of wash. Went to Barbara’s at 9, got a permanent. Came home, busy all day. In evening Dorothea came up to say goodbye to the Deming’s. Billie to Betty’s for a spaghetti supper. Dorothea and I called down there. Then Betty, Dorothea and I went down to Fern’s in Betty’s NEW car. Dorothea liked it very much. Fern had a couple bowel movements and is better except upset about Esther leaving.

 

 

 

Wednesday, October 25, 1978 ES and CLIFF, egg

 

A very nice sunny day. Es and Cliff up early and on their way to their home in Eustis Florida. I cleaned my living room, cooked a boiled dinner. Had Fern up for supper. Betty called in evening a minute. She took Fern home. We got another pullet egg today. Bill worked at Walt’s.

 

 

 

Thursday, October 26, 1978 cleaned kitchen

 

It was cloudy and some rain showers. Bill down to the camp. I cleaned the kitchen. Betty to coffee group. Bill down to Betty’s in PM to do some more on the barn cellar.
