The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Saturday, August 11, 1973

I did a lot today. Washed, cleaned up the house, defrosted both refrigerators. Made bread and rolls. In late p.m. Zak came up for the night. Betty, Walt and kids out on an overnight camping trip.



Sunday, August 12, 1973

A very nice day. Done regular work. Betty and Walt went to Lisbon. Billie went with Lawrence. The Horton’s came home from their camping trip. After supper Bill, Christie and I went for a long ride. Betty and Zak here in evening.



Monday, August 13, 1973 very nice day, new frames for glasses

It has been a very nice day. Nice drying day. I washed and went down to Betty’s a little while. I got new frames for my glasses. Betty and I picked the kids clothes over for school. We picked corn, shell beans, and squash today. We have had cukes and tomatoes for some time.

Tuesday, August 14, 1973 cloudy and light rain when we got up

Lloyd called a while this morning. Betty called, she and I went to town. Then we went down cellar and cleaned the chest out. I went down to Betty’s while Kimmy tried on her dresses.

Wednesday, August 8, 1973 Hot and Humid

It was a very hot and humid day. I done up regular work, went to town. Betty, George, Bill and I came home and I worked all afternoon making preparations for a cookout supper. The Horton family, Thomas family and Crook families here. I got a brand-new croquet set, a store full of underwear, candies, desk equipment, pencils pens, markers etc. A very pretty dress. A bottle of cream lotion, $10 in money and some nice beautiful cards. Had a beautiful cake made by Dorothea. A very nice time etc. We saw George’s slides. Stan called to say goodbye to the folks.







Thursday, August 9, 1973 BETTY AND GEORGE LEFT

We left at about 6:00 AM to go to the airport to take Betty and George back. We got there about 7:15 and soon Dorothea and Dave came. We all had a nice visit. Betty drove us down. At about 8:30 they went on to their plane. We watched them go. Then we came home about 9:30. I changed the beds, cleaned up the house, got things back in order. We miss them being around. I done my ironing all up.



Friday, August 10, 1973 HOT HOT

Another very hot day. I done up my work. Down to Betty’s. We cleaned up her house. Bill mowed Betty’s lawns. She and I went to Norway. She got grain and groceries. Came home. Bill and I went to town. Came back, got supper. We also got our blueberries, I put them in the deep-freeze. Esther here in evening and also the Horton’s here. They brought ice cream cones. It has been such a very hot evening and day. Still miss George and Betty’s company.

August 5 - 7, 1973










Sunday, August 5, 1973 A Beautiful day

It dawned nice and sunny and cool. We got breakfast and done up the work. Went to town. About 12, Esther, Walt, Cliff, Betty and all the children came and we went to Naples. We took a ride up the lake on the Songo River Queen. It was a beautiful day and a very pretty ride. On our way home we called at Jack and Sylvia’s. Didn’t see Jack though. Came home and got ready and went down to Betty’s for a barbecue chicken cookout. It was given by Esther and Betty, Fern brought the watermelon. Betty and George had a good time. Also all the family played badminton etc. Yates, Demings, Crooks, Crooks, Thomases, Hortons and Bill Walker were the guests.









Monday, August 6, 1973 a very nice day

It was a good day. We got our work done up and got ready and went to Dorothea and Dave’s. From there we left and went in Bill’s car to Andover Mass. to call on their cousin Hector Keith. But he wasn’t at home. We called to see Agnes Berdette. We had a good time and Dave is such a good driver.

Today Betty and George went down town. I washed and done a lot of odds and end jobs and made a custard pie. We had grill steaks for supper. Betty and kids up for lunch. Betty, George and Betty to Norway shopping

Wednesday, August 1, 1973

Partly cloudy. Some light rain. Didn’t do much today. In a.m. went down to Betty’s and looked at her photo albums. They enjoyed it all very much. Came home, I made preparations for supper. A happy surprise, Dorothea came and brought some goodies. She was here for supper. I’m glad she came. Also we had invited Stan to come. He seemed to enjoy his visit with everyone and supper. In evening Betty came up also. George and Betty seem to enjoy their visit here very much. Dorothea and Dave’s car is so pretty.



Thursday, August 2, 1973 RAIN

This has been a rainy day. George and Betty down town shopping. I did both refrigerators and washed floors. Kennard down to hospital for x-rays.



Friday, August 3, 1973 Very Hot

Went down to Douglas Hill in Sebago. Saw great sights and views etc. Up to the top of the hill and the guy took us all over the tower there. It was very interesting. Then we drove on down through to North Windham where Betty treated us to a McDonald’s hamburgers etc. This was all Betty treat to us. Came home, very hot. Bill and George mowed our lawns and Betty’s. Went to town shopping, had a late supper.



Saturday, August 4, 1973

Cloudy in a.m. but some sun during the day. We got up and got ready and went to Dorothea and Dave’s. Dave and Dorothea took us, Betty, George, Betty and I all over South Portland, Cape Elizabeth and out to Two Lights Park. We had a Kentucky fried chicken dinner given by Dorothea and Dave. We enjoyed being on the coast. We saw the tide come in. Then we drove on out to Old Orchard Beach and home. We had another nice day etc. Came home, had baked beans supper at Betty and Walt’s.
