The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 8 - 10, 1957



Thursday, August 8, 1957

A very nice day. I cooked. Went down to Mrs. Dearborn’s early so as to not have to go tomorrow. I had a nice birthday. $5 from Billie $5 from Mama. Kettle from Betty, singing teakettle from Fern and Lloyd. Also an aluminum clothes line. Cards from Esther, Cliff, Billie, Susan, Dorothea and Uncle Os.


Friday, August 9, 1957

A very nice day but hot. Betty, Bill and I went to Portland, done a little shopping. Betty and Bill got two more parakeets. I got picture frames. In evening Mama, Bill, Betty, Donnie and I went to Norway. We bought a new grill. Betty got a pair of shorts and blouse and socks.

Saturday, August 10, 1957

Rained all day. I cleaned up the house. Cooked. Betty and Norma Gay called today and stayed all night. Bob and Blanche over here in evening. Donnie nervous again today. Cleared off tonight.

Sunday, August 4, 1957

A cloudy day but quite warm. Billie and Bill finished up the fencing. Put cows in today for good. Billie worked at Chet’s haying. Bill and I went down in the woods. Betty and Steve finished pulling the weeds. Bobbie mowed the other ones. I wrote to Es and Dorothea. Hot today. Bill and I called on Hayd today.

A very nice day. I washed, clothes dried good. Got the clothes in and in the evening I ironed.



Tuesday, August 6, 1957 Cool

 I churned, cooked. Betty and I took a walk down in the woods. What a walk we had and the dog. Donnie
 still better.





Wednesday, August 7, 1957

Cool. I cleaned up the house. Went down to Ferns, picked some blackberries. Visited with Fern a while. An accident over on the ski tow today. Betty mowed lawns. Donnie better. Billie out tonight. Betty and Holly up to Arthurlene’s tonight. Letter from Dorothea.

It was a nice day. I washed. Betty painted back porch floor. She and Dawn went downtown. Dawn called. Hot today.



Wednesday, July 31, 1957

Been busy all a.m. In p.m. Fern, Lloyd, Floss and I went up to Yager neighborhood blueberrying. I got about 12 quarts nice berries. Raymond over in evening. Betty and Stevie down to ballgame, didn’t get home til late. Billie did some fencing. Donnie about the same. Hot today.

Thursday, August 1, 1957

Cooked, picked over the blueberries. Did the ironing. Donnie still sick. Betty and Stevie weeded the strawberry bed. I been busy today.



Friday, August 2, 1957

A very nice day, quite hot. I worked at Mrs. Dearborn’s in p.m. I did up my housework and swept and dusted, went to town after Bill got home. Betty and Stevie pulled more weeds.



Saturday, August 3, 1957

A very hot day. I cooked, cleaned up the house. Betty and Steve pulled more weeds. Billie took Judy up to Chet’s to a Holstein bull. Henry Peterson called in evening. Got a letter from Dorothea today. She is making plans now to marry Dennis Harvey Adair. She is so excited.

Friday, July 26, 1957

A nice day. I worked at Dearborn’s in early a.m. I came home and did a big wash. Donnie also bad all day. Bill, Kennard and I went to town in late p.m. Donnie fussed and up and down all last night.



Saturday, July 27, 1957

A nice day, not too hot. I cleaned up the house, baked beans and some rolls. Went down town and got Donnie some medicine after supper. Betty and Stevie did the dishes. Donnie sick all day.





Sunday, July 28, 1957

Showery day, heavy rain all day by showers. Billie and Betty did some fencing. Bill worked in strawberry bed. Fern had a new rug put into her living room today. She has had a house full of roomers this weekend. Wayne C. and Horace Flint Junior called in p.m., also Brud and Verna and children. Bill and I called at Ferns in p.m. Donnie still sick.



Monday, July 29, 1957 Dorothea’s birthday

A cloudy rainy day. I got letters off. Wrote to Child Welfare department. Betty up to Dawn’s in a.m. She and Steve around here in p.m. Donnie still sick. I called Dr. Skillin but he couldn’t come. Dorothea’s 20 today.

Cloudy, not too hot around here. In p.m. it rained some. Mrs. Parks and mother called. Kay here for dinner. Billie worked at Chet’s today haying. Let cows into oats today. Milan 38 today. Mama down to Rockway tonight for supper with Fern and Lloyd.



Monday, July 22, 1957

Rained hard. Bill went to work early this morning. But came home because of rain. Today got a check for $.25 for my addressing envelopes. Stevie up today. Hayd Smart got his foot hurt today. Clearing off in p.m.



Tuesday, July 23, 1957

A very nice cool and windy day. Dawn, David and I went over to Otisfield blueberrying. Got about 6 or 8 quarts piece. I washed early this morning.



Wednesday, July 24, 1957

A nice forenoon. In p.m., cloudy, cool and showers. I ironed most of day. A letter from Dorothea, also card and booklet of San Francisco. She and Lois has been up there to Hamilton A. F. B. Had a good time. She wrote a cheery letter. She would like to see the folks at home. She is on the homesick side. Bill worked over to Jim’s tonight.

A cool day, showers in p.m. Betty cooked in a.m. Stevie up here. I cleaned up the house. Donnie not good at all.
