The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 3 - 6, 1969 First Frost of the Year


Friday, October 3, 1969

A rainy day. I finished cleaning the kitchen. Billie help me to do some things, fix the radiators, lights etc. I went to town in evening. Carmen came up for a little while after supper.




Saturday, October 4, 1969

A beautiful day. I cleaned the breezeway. Bill and Billie moved the furniture out and cleaned the living room rug. It looks so nice. Woodrow Dobbins called in PM. Bill finished harrowing the garden. Fern up for supper. Lloyd came after her.

Sunday, October 5, 1969 FROST

This morning we had the first white frost for the season. Didn’t get up till about 8 o’clock. I took a bath, did up the work. Made a pie and cake. Cooked a ham dinner. The Horton’s came up. I went down there with Betty. Bill and Billie went down and mowed their lawns for the last time. Also they mowed ours and put away the mowers. Bob and Pat called, brought me some cukes to make some pickles.

Foggy. I washed. Cleaned up the house. It seems good to have it all clean.

September 29 - October 2, 1969


Monday, September 29, 1969  Lake Region High School

Cleared up today. I did a good big wash. I cleaned Billie’s bedroom. It looks very good. Carmen didn’t go to school. The new Lake Region High School opened up today. I washed Billie’s curtains today and a lot of bedding.



Tuesday, September 30, 1969

I did another wash. Betty, kids and I over to Norway. Betty did grocery shopping and curtains shopping. Came home, she put up her curtains. I helped her with the baby. I did my bedroom. Carmen still home. I washed my kitchen curtains.


Wednesday, October 1, 1969

A real nice day. I did a big wash and they all dried good. I cleaned the living room. Billie helped me with the lampshades etc. I helped Betty a little while today. Bill to bed early with a bad cold. Carmen back-to-school. I washed my living room curtains.



Thursday, October 2, 1969

A cloudy day. I cleaned the most of the kitchen. Dorothea, Jeff and kids called. Kim came up here for a little while today. They went to Fryeburg Fair. I called at Ferns tonight. I did a little washing.

A nice day. Betty a lot better. I was down for a little while.



Friday, September 26, 1969

Betty took me to town. I did some errands and a dite of grocery shopping. I didn’t do much here at home. Billie took me to town in evening. I did my shopping. We called at Betty and Walt’s.



Saturday, September 27, 1969

I done up my regular work, baked beans. Down to Betty’s and stayed with the kids while Betty and Walt went after paper to paper their living room. Carmen and Kim have colds. Bill and Walt cleaned up the mess down back of the barn at Walt’s. It looks so much better.

It was kind of foggy and cloudy but it cleared off. Bill and Walt papered the living room today at Betty’s. It looks very nice. Carmen better. Zack has a cold.

September 21 - 24, 1969

A beautiful day. We cleaned the deep-freeze and cleaned the cellar. It looks very good. Bill mowed lawns. He and Billie mowed and trimmed for Walt. Betty and her three children came up here and washed. Betty walked her son up in his carriage. Betty is a lot better. Had my vacuum to use today. It seems so good to have it again to use. Dawn Parks and husband called at Betty and Walt in p.m.



Monday, September 22, 1969

Foggy early but cleared. A nice mild day. Billie home with a bad cold. I did a big wash, made two batches of mincemeat. Cooked one and canned it. Called at Betty’s a little while. Billie got their meat for them. Fern, Lloyd called here and Betty’s. Mr. and Mrs. Doney called to pay Billie for the meat.



Tuesday, September 23, 1969

I ironed, went down to Betty’s. She is having awful pain. I did her work up for her and helped her to get their supper going.



Wednesday, September 24, 1969

Betty a little better, I went down and helped her again. It is very pleasant down there, they like it real well. I went to town with Lloyd and shopped for Betty. Fern and Lloyd over to Norway for dinner to celebrate her wedding anniversary. Bill and I called on the Horton’s in evening.

September 17 - 20, 1969 Betty and Zack (as Nanny Spelled Zak) Come Home

A cloudy day. Walt to work today. I did the ironing. Cooked a roast for supper. Kennard called. Carmen to school. Kim is very tired, she didn’t feel too good today. I babysat for Walt while he went to see Betty.



Thursday, September 18, 1969 BETTY and SON came home

Zak is home!


A beautiful day. Sunny and clear. I got my work done up. Went down to Walt and Betty’s and cleaned Betty’s house up good. Walt brought Betty and baby home about 10:30. She was very glad to be home. It looks very good to her. The baby is a sweet pretty little bundle. His sisters were very pleased with him. Fern, Lloyd called. Walt did some grocery shopping. He helped Betty. Betty is very very sore and lame. Holly and family called in evening. We went down. She was so awful tired. I cooked their supper, Walt came and got it. Bill worked on vacuum cleaner. Billie picked vegetables tonight, frost warnings.



Friday, September 19, 1969 Slight Frost

Another nice day. I did up the work and ironed. Bill and a man called who is tarring the roads. Used the phone. Went to town tonight after supper. Helped Betty a little today. I sent Esther’s letter.



Saturday, September 20, 1969

A nice day, on the cooler side. We didn’t get up very early, 8 AM. Did regular work. Kids came up, Walt is sick. Betty not very good. Billie, Lloyd hauled garden plants. Kids rode with them in the truck. I helped Betty in p.m. I made rolls and squash pie. Took some down to Hortons for their supper. Fern up here. Bill worked on my vacuum cleaner. Got it fixed. Dave Thomas family called this evening. Aunt Ava and Thomases called at Betty and Walt’s also.
