The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 21 -23, 1990 Fern's 88th Birthday

 

Sunday, October 21, 1990 Fern 88 years today

 

A quite nice day. Today we had a very nice birthday party at Betty and Walt’s for Fern. It was her 88th year. It was a nice day and she enjoyed it very much. A good old boiled dinner. All ate very well. Fern, Dorothea and David, Carmen, Kim, Betty Smith, Billie and I, Brogan and Joy later. Tom called in a little later to eat. He was on the police duty and the hosts, Betty and Walt, the host and hostess. Fern got a lot of nice gifts. Dot Smith not too good today. Jason came to work today.

 



 


 

Monday, October 22, 1990

 

I get a nice long letter from Zack. Very nice. I was very pleased. He is doing okay and we are very pleased. I was busy. I washed and got the beef tongue and heart on cooking. What a job. It smells the house up so. Carmen came for a little while then she and Betty, Brogan and I went over to Walt’s lots and they put up the signs and one over in black black mountain. They had liver and onions for supper. Very good they said. Dot still not good. Lorraine down to see her and Rayburn both there and Bea, also Wanda.

 

 

 

Tuesday, October 23, 1990

 

A cloudy dreary day. It rained off and on. The rest of the week don’t look too good. I didn’t do much. I wrote to Zack. Carmen, Bro came also Betty. She dropped the thing in her back. She is quite lame. Dorothy a dite better in some ways, still not too good. Well Carmen got a call from Kurt, he is coming to Gray and wants to meet her on Thursday. I hope he can.

Thursday, October 18, 1990 new glasses

 

A nice day. Quite mild. I got my new glasses today. It is so good to have them. Carmen came today. She did the work and down and helped Betty. Billie been busy outside. Well the hens laid one egg today. Carmen took me down to get my glasses.

 

 

 

Friday, October 19, 1990 1 egg

 

A mixed day of weather. Cloudy, foggy, rain showers, sunshine and black heavy clouds, windy and cold winds toward the late p.m. It got quite cold. Carmen came and cleaned the house. Brogan down to Grammys most of the day. Charlene here today. I made a chocolate pudding and we made a fish chowder for supper. Carmen and Brogan and Kim home this p.m. first time in a long time. Kay called tonight to witness a paper I had to sign in regards to the sale of the car. Cold tonight.Dot Smith operated on today, quite sick.

 


 

 

Saturday, October 20, 1990 beef went

 

Today the two beef went. They had quite a time getting them loaded, especially the smallest one. David, Wade and Billie. Carmen called. Also Lori called with her two babies. Very cute and smart. Dennis came and got Brogan for the weekend. I didn’t do much today except regular work. Betty and Walt over to Lewiston shopping etc. Betty came and helped to get the supper. Billie and David went up to Wade’s and Waterford get the beef heart, liver and tongue. They called from the hospital. Dot had a bad day. She had a shock and a heart attack. Lorraine and Rayburn was with her.

October 15 -17, 1990

 

Monday, October 15, 1990 nephew and cousin Jack and wife left today

 

 

 



A new horse came today. It is very pretty, sort of dappled gray. Betty, Carmen and Kim rode on it. Brogan rode on the pony. Well this has been a most beautiful day. It is so good after the rain. Well our guests John and wife Raye left about 11 or so to go. They will stay in Massachusetts tonight, go to Virginia tomorrow. Billie has been busy all day. Get a lot done. Betty and Carmen got the chickens in today. Jason worked tonight for Betty tonight.

 

 


 

Tuesday, October 16, 1990 oil $136.89

 

Betty, Carmen and Brogan were riding the horses today. I was down there. Jason worked tonight. Betty Smith to the ear specialist today for her eye and nose problem. I been doing the papers today. I hope to get them all read by tomorrow. Carmen and I packed away summer dresses.

 

 

 

Wednesday, October 17, 1990 Brogan Alyssa Horton Willette’s fourth birthday Brogan’s 4th birthday

 

A nice mild day. I didn’t do much. I read rest of the B News and the Advertiser. Betty up here this forenoon and also Kim. And Susan call. Dennis was up to Carmen’s for Brogan’s birthday. They went down to Betty’s and Brogan wanted Dennis to see her riding on her pony. Her grandmother Willette, aunt and cousin also called tonight to see Brogan on her birthday. Billie down to Betty’s for a spaghetti supper. Very good he said. My glasses came today. I will get them tomorrow. Carmen done shopping. Sent Zack a letter.

Friday, October 12, 1990 PONY CAME TONIGHT

 

Well we saw sunshine today after six days of rain, drizzle and fog. Carmen and Betty getting ready for the horses. Carmen and Betty cleaned my house. Carmen to town to do the shopping. Today about 2:30 we saw sunshine which was a pleasant surprise to everyone. Well tonight the pony (Misty) came. They delivered her, got here about 9:10 PM. Brogan was pleases. Betty has a lot of company this evening. John and Raye Crook, Dorothea, Joy, Carmen and Brogan.

 


 

 

Saturday, October 13, 1990 Rain Rain Rain Rain

 

This has been a very miserable day. I’ll be so glad when it clears. Today I made roles and a cake. Betty invited us down for supper. (Baked beans) to join them, Jack Crook, and wife Raye, Dorothea and David, Brogan and Carmen. A nice supper, also in evening we had Jack, Sylvia up to meet these cousins of theirs. Joy was there, we had a nice visit.

 








 

 

Sunday, October 14, 1990 Brogan A Willette Horton

 

Today A VERY VERY VERY NICE SUNNY day after seven days of rain. It has been awful. But it was a beautiful beautiful day. How pleased everyone was for such a nice day. Well about 1 PM the family and friends called at Carmen’s for Brogan’s birthday party. It was very very nice. She had a lot of very nice gifts. She had the honor of having her second cousin and his wife John Crook III and her local cousins, grandparents, aunts. Aunt Kim made a very pretty turtle cake

October 9 - 11, 1990 Surprise Visit from Scottish Relatives

 

Tuesday, October 9, 1990 Perm

 

1:30 my perm. My perm today, a very good one. I didn’t do much except got cleaned up and ready to go to the perm at 1:30. Carmen took me. She took Billie to the foot doctor Goldenhar at Fryeburg. She got a very good supper. Cloudy all day.

 

 

 

Wednesday, October 10, 1990 SURPRISE

 

Cloudy, and dark and dreary today. Well we got the surprise of our lives today. John Crook Junior and his wife Raye came from Scotland. We all was very pleased to see them. Betty, Carmen, Brogan, Betty and I was on our way to go up to Augusta way to see or look for ponies and a riding horse and luckily we hadn’t got started and my nephew and wife by marriage called. So we immediately changed our plans to visit. Had lunch at Betty’s. Also a roast pork supper down there. Up to Dorothea and David’s in evening. Took pictures. A very nice eventful day and evening.

 



 



 

Thursday, October 11, 1990

 

Today I went way up to Augusta, Vasselboro and other nearby towns looking at ponies. They found one. Also riding horse. Didn’t leave until about 1 o’clock. They found the places good and easy. It was a pretty ride. Ate on the way. Got home about 8:30 PM. It was a good ride. Dorothea and David up to Vermont to visit with David’s grandmother, they had a very nice long visit with her. It rained all day.
