The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Monday, August 2, 1982

 

Well a cloudy rainy day. I did my wash. Had to dry them in the dryer. I watched the soaps in PM. Kim didn’t work. Zak called, he is doing a very good job with his chicks. Zak and Kim went over to Pleasant Mountain with the Tomei’s and rode down the slide. Billie did a dite of mowing at David’s and Arthur Andrews. Also at Junior Chadbourne’s. Bill and I called at Betty’s. It looks very nice down there.

 

 

 

Tuesday, August 3, 1982 $363, $159

 

Well not a very good day. I got my work done up early and got ready and went down to Thena’s for the day. Esther, Fern and I. We had a nice day and a very good dinner. It was cloudy and showery then about the time we got ready to come home it cleared off. Billie’s colds still bad.

A fair day. I done up regular work. Bill to town and put the checks in. I got vegetable from the gardens for supper. I saw Carmen when she went to work this morning. Bill getting bad again. He is bleeding.

 

 

 

Thursday, August 5, 1982 CARMEN

 

An all weather day. It finally cleared and nice and warm. I done up the regular work and went to town. Didn’t start till late and it was late when we got home. I fixed beet greens for supper. Billie finished mowing up to Charlene’s. Bill didn’t do much today. Well tonight Carmen had another date (dinner).

A quite nice day, it was cloudy and windy. We got a small rain shower in evening. I done up the work. Went to town. Betty took us. Billie got the mower back on the tractor. David helped him. They, Butch, hauled rest of David’s hay. Dorothea and David’s mother froze a lot of vegetables today. Es got her lawn mower back home. They worked on the back of the trailer.

 

 

 

Friday, July 30, 1982 NEW FORD ESCORT, 1.5  pint raspberries, Carmen on a trip

 

Well I washed. I ironed. I picked string beans. A lot of other jobs, picked raspberries. Bill down to Betty’s. Billie mowed grass in the pasture. He done a lot of other jobs. Carmen and Lisa Osgood left on a trip up to Belfast tonight about 5:30 to go out to sea fishing. They were excited about going. I hope they will have good weather. Tonight Walt brought home a brand-new Ford Escort. Black with red trim and red upholstery inside. Betty, Zak and I over to show it to Kim. Called at Fern’s. When we got home Susan and Esther and two kids were here. They washed my dishes then we went down to see the new Museum at Betty’s.

 

 

 

Saturday, July 31, 1982

 

Well a quite nice forenoon. Then it got a dite hazy. Then thunderclouds filled in. I done up my regular work. Made bread and rolls. Dorothea and David’s mother out buying antiques. Betty, Walt and Zak worked in their barn all day. Kim called. She went to work tonight. David called. They mowed the lawns here. Billie got awful lame.

Sunday, August 1, 1982 Carmen home about 8

 

Well it was a quite nice day. I done up the regular work then I did the flower gardens. Then we killed the old hens. Esther came over and spent the afternoon. Walt’s sister and family came about one or 2 o’clock. They are going to stay at the camp for a few days. Well Carmen and Lisa home at about 8 PM. They had a very good time. They caught about 60 Mackerel  between them. She saw some girls from college and a boy from college she admires very much from college, Larry. I’m so glad she had such a good time fishing in the sea etc.

July 25 - 28, 1982

Sunday, July 25, 1982 goat gone

 

Well I didn’t get up till seven. I got the breakfast, David was here. It was quite late. We picked some string beans. I got them on to cook. I read the B news or started to. Esther and Vince called. Visited for about an hour. Billie called at Fern’s. Barry Richardson finished the barn upstairs today. A lazy day. Not too good a day for hay either. Today David’s goat was worse so they had the vet, and she was put to sleep. They felt so bad.

 

 

 

Monday, July 26, 1982 DAVID’S HAY

 

A beautiful day. I did a wash, hung clothes outside. They dried very good. They mowed David’s hay today. A very nice day for her. We called at Betty’s, we walked over back, out back of the barn where they plan to build the new tyup. I went up to see the hay. Betty and Dawn up to the Lake and trimmed out the bushes. Kim didn’t get home until 4 AM from babysitting.

 

 

 

Tuesday, July 27, 1982 David’s hay in, picked raspberries

 

This has been a nice day, sunny all day, late in PM it got cloudy. They baled and raked David’s hay. They are getting it in tonight or late this PM. He has an awful lot of it. Billie and I picked rest of the peas today. Butch tractor broke down so they borrowed Billie’s. David’s mother came to visit at Dorothea and David’s today. Carmen’s friends from over on the road came over tonight. He is helping them hay.

 

 

 

Wednesday, July 28, 1982 raining

 

This has been a rainy day. I done up regular work. I worked at the desk. Carmen came home early. I went down to Betty’s. She was working up in her gallery. It will be nice when it is all done. She is pleased with it. Carmen out on her first dinner date.

July 22 -24, 1982 Birthday and Anniversary Celebration at Twin Oaks

Well this is awful. We got up this morning and it was raining. It made us all sick because the hay was flat. It rained by showers all day. I done up my work and I went to Portland or South Portland with Betty and kids. Kim to the orthodontist. Betty got Zak a pair of dungarees. A fan for Kim’s bedroom. Also Kim got Betty and Walt a wedding anniversary gift. About suppertime it cleared off and there was a very nice clear sunset. I hope it will be good tomorrow.

 

 

 

Friday, July 23, 1982

 

Well it cleared and some clouds. We picked peas and beans. Betty and I to town. I have been very busy. I done my hair and I cooked, much all kinds of preparations for tomorrow. Bill busy and Billie, they mowed etc.

 

 

 

Saturday, July 24, 1982 birthday and anniversary, got the hay all in

 

A very nice sunny day until late PM. I got up early, done work up, made bread, frosted cake, made a salad and 1000 other things for the picnic at the new lakeside cottage of the Horton’s on Stearns Pond. Fern came up, she shelled peas. We left to go up there at about three. It was so nice up there. It was for Dorothea’s birthday and Betty and Walt’s anniversary. They got nice gifts and for my birthday at of the same time. I got a small battery TV to take with me wherever I go from the Hortons, from Dorothea and Dave I got a cute table and a very pretty china teacup and saucer. We had for food: roast turkey, green string beans, peas, cukes, salads, olives, cottage cheese, home made bread, milk, chocolate milk, Iced tea, coffee. Es, Susan and children, Walt’s family, us and Fern.

Well I didn’t get up very early. I done up regular work. We had peas for supper. We went up to Dorothea’s. Billie picked berries. Kids called.

 

 

 

Monday, July 19, 1982 Hot

 

Well I got up and got my washing done early. Billie busy all day doing different things. Betty, Billie, kids, dogs and I all went up to the cottage. Bill and Betty putting the screens on. What a big improvement. Kids went swimming. We had a big shower, thundering and lightning. When we got home it hadn’t rained a drop here.

 

 

 

Tuesday, July 20, 1982 Walt’s 54th birthday, made cookies, rain

 

Well what a day this has been. It rained all day. Betty and kids all up to the camp and made preparations for Walt’s birthday. It was nice and cozy. A nice fire going in the camp and warm. They all enjoyed it very much. I did my ironing and a few other jobs. Dorothea and Esther, Vince and Chris went to Scarborough but they didn’t buy much.

 






 

 

 

 

Wednesday, July 21, 1982 Milan 63 years, mowed hay

 

A nice day, beautiful. I swept etc. Betty took us to town because she has got to go to South Portland with Kim tomorrow. When we came home she went down and got Fern and brought her up for the day. Kim and Zak picked a lot of peas. Also Billie and I picked peas and string beans. I did not get to see all my programs today. Billie mowed rest of Walt’s hay. I hope it doesn’t rain. Betty took Fern and I up to the cottage, it is so nice up there.
