The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 1 - 4, 1974


Wednesday, May 1, 1974 Tatum came home

Raining when we got up this morning. It cleared, but very hard strong winds. Betty got the kitten back from V Hospital. We cleaned Carmen and Kims’ rooms. Bill worked on the form for his cement foundation.



Thursday, May 2, 1974

A quite nice day. Down to Betty’s early. We cleaned Zak’s room, dark bedroom, upstairs bathroom and up and down stairs, halls. Bill worked on his ground for the cement for the new barn.



Friday, May 3, 1974

A mostly cloudy day. I went down to Betty’s early. We got her bedroom, downstairs bathroom and hall all done. Then we went to town and done some shopping. Bill paid Dexter McDaniels $200 for bulldozing etc. Lloyd and Stan called today. It began to rain early this evening.



Saturday, May 4, 1974

A nice day but very cold and windy. I done regular work, baked beans. I cleaned the electric stove and refrigerator. Bill working on his foundation for the barn. Billie helped also he helped Walt haul manure. Carmen played with Cathy Smith, then went to a birthday party in p.m.

April 28 - 30, 1974


Sunday, April 28, 1978 Carmen and Kimberly

A pretty good day. I done regular work. Washed and done some cleaning up etc. Billie worked down to Walt’s. Hortons came up. Zak stayed here all night. I did all my silverware. Today Carmen and Kimberly walked for the walk-a-thon for the March of Dimes.





Monday, April 29, 1974

 Partly cloudy. I went down to Betty’s. We went to Norway in a.m. and in p.m. we cleaned cupboards, stove, ironed and Betty did the refrigerator after supper. In evening Esther came over. Kim is a little lame this morning from the 10 mile walk yesterday.



Tuesday, April 30, 1974 barn, Tatum

 A mostly sunny day. Very warm today. They came and bulldozed for the barn. I went down to Betty’s early this morning. She had to have Tatum over to the vets at 8 o’clock. I came home. I did a big wash. Made two pies and did some mending. Dawn down to Betty’s. We found some of the chicks pecking one another. Tonight Betty, Carmen and I and we picked up Dorothea went to Portland City Auditorium to see Ann Landers, a Portland Press Herald writer. She made a speech. Also there we saw Don McWilliams of Portland’s TV station, WCSH, sports newscaster.

April 25 - 27, 1974


Thursday, April 25, 1974

A pretty good day, sunny but very cold. I went down to Betty’s. We cleaned her bedroom closet and bureau draws. Then she, Bill, Zak and I went to Portland and got the plywood for the roof of the barn. Came home, got supper then went down to Fern’s in evening. Betty got some names on some photos Fern gave her.



Friday, April 26, 1974

Cold and partly cloudy. It cleared up in PM. Betty went to Portland with Lloyd and Fern and Esther. Lloyd down for a check up. Dorothea and Jeff called and was here for a long visit. I was very glad to see them both. Jeff has a nice car, it rides very good. He is very pleased with it. The town fixed the culvert in Walt’s yard. Bill did the work scraping at and smoothing it over.



Saturday, April 27, 1974 Zak photo, Betty

A beautiful clear hot day. It was very cold and frost on the ground when we got up. It soon warmed up. I done up my regular work. Washed, down to Betty’s a minute to see the nice photos of Zak. They came today. I cleaned the lower cupboards and draws in the kitchen. Also bathroom closet and draws. Billie did his fencing and most of Walt’s they got done. Bill got a load of Bedding. Billie went with Lawrence in p.m. Betty and Walt rode the horses today and went down to Dawn’s in p.m. to help on the barn.

April 21 - 24, 1974 Jeff has a 1968 Ford


Sunday, April 21, 1974 Gordon Brill and Alton Bean hauled the rafters for the barn this p.m.

A very nice mild day. I did all my washing, got them in and ironed. Made a cake, cooked a pot roast for supper. Billie and Walt hauled out most of the dressing. Bill fixed the door at Lloyd’s and then helped with the dressing. Betty and kids (all three) took turns driving the tractor. This has been a very warm day, up in the 60s. Brill and Bean hauled some of the lumber for the new barn. Billie done some raking today or late p.m.



Monday, April 22, 1974

A fair day but very hot, 75 to 80°. In a.m. Betty and I and Zak went to Windham to get the fence posts. In p.m. we began cleaning up alongside of the road. It has been very hot today. Kids came home and put their shorts on.



Tuesday, April 23, 1974 Jeff has a 1968 Ford

A partly cloudy day, some rain showers. It was a little warmer. I washed and cleaned my kitchen and bathroom ceilings. I’m so glad to get them done. Bill didn’t do anything. Betty entertained her coffee friends. Also in p.m. went to Westbrook and got Esther. She came home from Joy’s. Jeff has a new car 1968 Ford.



Wednesday, April 24, 1974

Snow on the ground this morning, it has been a very nasty day. Snow, rain and not too warm. Bill and I worked at Betty’s all day papering and painting the den. Mary Anne called there today. Walt home early, one course  completed of his real estate course. I went down to Fern’s and helped to clean her cellarway and cellar. Esther helped too.

Cold and windy. I worked at Betty’s. Carmen came up tonight after supper to stay all night. She had company. Zenya.



Thursday, April 18, 1974

A pretty good day. Down to Betty’s. We worked on the kitchen cupboards. She had an appointment at the dentist. Bill did some odds and end jobs down to Betty’s. Carmen had company. Kim Musgrave. Kim Horton came home tonight. She had such a good time at Dorothea’s, they went up to Joy’s yesterday.



Friday, April 19, 1974

A pretty good day, on the cool side. We finished kitchen cupboards and did the china cupboards in the dining room. I was down there all day. In evening she and Walt came up. Kimmy up here all night. Bill Melbye’s cottage (the former Gleason cottage also Seavers was owner of it at one time) burned flat tonight. Esther went to Joy’s today for a few days. Fern and Lloyd went with them.



Saturday, April 20, 1974

Partly cloudy. Some sun. Very cold this morning. It got warmed up a little during the day. I got up early, got my work done and went down to Betty’s for the day. She and Walt and Carmen all went down to Dawn and Ed’s for the day to help them on the barn. I washed and did lot down there today. Kimmy was up here most of the day. Billie went with Lawrence to get some cattle. He got kicked by a steer and his knee is swollen, quite bad. Today Dexter came to see about digging for the foundation of the new barn.
