The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 13 - 16, 1974 Easter Sunday


Saturday, April 13, 1974

A miserable day. I baked beans, made rolls and made preparations for tomorrow. Kimmy up here some today. Billie went with Lawrence up to Washington Maine. Betty and I to town in p.m.



Sunday, April 14, 1974 Easter Sunday

It was quite cloudy today, but it didn’t rain so the people could dress in their Easter finery. Carmen, Kimmy and Zak all dressed in their new Easter clothes. They all looked very nice. Betty and Walt too looked very nice. We had a very nice ham dinner. It began to rain late in evening.

Monday, April 15, 1974

A nice day. Dorothea and David called much to our surprise. Was very glad to see them. Kimmy went home with them for a few days. Fern and Lloyd called also Walt home today. Billie too, it was a holiday because of April 19. Carmen came up tonight to stay all night.



Tuesday, April 16, 1974 CHICKS CAME

Betty to her coffee talk at Sandra Smith’s. Came home at noon. Her chicken had come. She had to get ready for them because she hadn’t  expected them. Zak up here because he had a cold while Betty was gone. Susan and children called today. She brought the root beer bottles back. Carmen here today. She and I made some filled cookies.

April 9 - 12, 1974


Tuesday, April 9, 1974 snow 8 inches, schools closed at noon

It began snowing this morning early and windy. It accumulated fast. I went down to Betty’s with Bill. She and I went to town. We had to go home and got the truck. It got so bad. Came home, got lunch. Betty and Zak went home. I done up my work. Did a big ironing and read papers. Billie didn’t work in p.m. Fern sick. Betty and I called down there this forenoon. Betty had a spaghetti supper and invited Billie down. We had a good salt fish chowder. Carmen and Kim home early. Closed all the schools at noon in SAD 61.



Wednesday, April 10, 1974

A miserable day. Cloudy, cold, windy and snow flurries most all day. It began to clear about 4:30. I was down to Betty’s. We cleaned her desk in dark bedroom and the bureau draws in the bathroom.

I went to town. Did a little shopping.



Friday, April 12, 1974 Kimberley Allie Boutilier Horton eight years old

Tonight they came home from school for a weeks spring vacation. I hope will be a nice weather. Tonight I had Kimmy up for her birthday supper. She enjoyed it, was quite pleased. I had fried chicken etc.

April 6 - 8, 1974 Kim's Birthday Party


Saturday, April 6, 1974
No rain or snow, but cloudy all day and on the cool damp side. I have been very busy all day. I done regular work, washed windows, floors, dusted, cooked, went to town. Bill and Billie and Walt took the birdhouse down. Lloyd, Zak, Walt and Ilan called also Betty dropped in a minute. Bill watched his first ballgame this p.m. Billie cleaned up the garage, did some raking.



Sunday, April 7, 1970 Kim’s DAY

A partly cloudy day. I got my work done up early. Did a dite of washing. I got ready and went to Betty’s. Esther was there also Dorothea, Fern and I. We all helped to make the Italian sandwiches for the party. Dorothea made a beautiful cake. Dorothea, Dave, Fern, Lloyd, Esther, Cliff, Bill, Billie and I with the Horton family celebrated Kim’s eighth birthday. She will be 8 on April 12. She was very pleased with all her nice gifts. Billie went with Lawrence today down to York and Kennebunk.

Monday, April 8, 1974

A fair day, but very cold. A raw wind. I did a big wash. Bill and I went down to Dorothea’s, took some eggs down. Dawn came up to Betty’s and got her hens and took home. I have not been down to Betty’s today.

April 3 - 5, 1974


Wednesday, April 3, 1974 a beautiful day

A beautiful day. This is been a very nice warm and sunny day. I got my clothes out early. Went down to Betty’s, we cleaned the bureau draws in Carmen’s room. Then it was so nice and warm, we cleaned the shed chamber. My ankle quite lame and stiff. I slipped outside this morning. Checks came today, we had the increase today. What a help that will be. Another increase coming in July.



Thursday, April 4, 1974

Well, back to cloudy miserable days again. No change till end of week. Anyway, we went to Portland and Westbrook, done Kim’s birthday shopping. Dorothea went with us. Had a good time. Brought home a Kentucky Fried Chicken for supper. Billie had us pick up one for Chet and Lil, it being Lil’s birthday. In evening Esther came over.



Friday, April 5, 1974

A miserable day weatherwise. I went down to Betty’s early, came home, ironed. Dawn called at Betty’s. They went down to Kitty Linscott’s to see her goats. Zak stayed here. In p.m. Betty took me to town and then we went to Norway and got rest of Kimmy’s gifts. We wrapped them. I came home, got supper. Billie to Norway and got seeds, fertilizer etc. Then he and Bill took truck and took Billie up to get milk. It rained hard this p.m. Dawn called here with Betty today. Carmen had two invitations out tonight, one at Sally Clark’s slumber party and one over to Zenya’s. She went to Zenya’s.

March 31 - April 2, 1974


Sunday, March 31, 1974 Zak sick

A miserable day. I done regular work. Bath, breakfast, housework. I looked at papers, cooked dinner. Down to Betty’s to babysit for a couple hours. Zak still very sick. Carmen to a birthday party. Kim up here all day and for supper.

Monday, April 1, 1974

It was cloudy when we got up. I got ready, went down to Betty’s. We got ready and went to Westbrook to grocery shop. Called at Dorothea’s. Zak stayed there. We got home a little after 2 PM. It cleared and was a nice spring day. Zak better.



Tuesday, April 2, 1974

Done up regular work. Down to Betty’s for a little while. She took Zak to school. He is better. Betty down to visit with her friends, “The Coffee Gab Session.” I cooked a chicken, made a cake, done some odds and end jobs. Down to Betty’s in p.m. to help her. Zak up here for supper. It rained very hard in late p.m. I done my wash after supper to have it ready to hang out early in morning.
