The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 22 - 24, 1969 Carmen Begins School in Bridgton


Tuesday, April 22, 1969

Mostly cloudy today. I dite of sunshine. I cleaned the living room and most of the kitchen. Went to Dr. Cornelius for a checkup or physical. All okay. Bill put on some more blinds and painted some on the ends of the house. I got the curtains back from the cleaners and I up. Raining tonight. Aunt Ava called a minute, brought the paper back.



Wednesday, April 23, 1969

Another miserable day. It rained hard and it rained awful hard all night and the wind blowed so hard. The ground was all flooded this morning. Betty and kids came about 11. I finished the kitchen. Betty went down town to the school and she enrolled Carmen. Aunt Ava didn’t have any water, her pump got flooded. Kids were pleased to be here. Betty is glad to be moving.



Thursday, April 24, 1969 Carmen began school here today

Another miserable day. Bill and I worked down cellar all day. The cellar looked real good all painted over on the walls. It has been a cold miserable rainy day. I did some on the breezeway but it was so cold I couldn’t wash the windows. Carmen began school here today. She will finish her school year out here.

April 18 - 21, 1969


Friday, April 18, 1969 $4.50

It was clear and sunny in a.m. Today got very warm, up in the 70s. Late in p.m. it began to get colder and about dark it started to rain hard. Today I worked at Dorothy’s. In p.m. I came home, did the blue bathroom ceiling and walls. Finished the kitchen ceiling. I did a ironing. Talked with Betty. Edgar Johns came and got the chair today. Bad snow storm two years ago today.



Saturday, April 19, 1969

It rained all night hard. It let up this forenoon. Later in p.m. it began to rain then change to snow. North east storm and it got cold. Bill began a weeks vacation today. He worked down cellar getting the walls painted white. He came down with a cold. Lloyd called here today. Billie worked for Lawrence today. I cleaned all the radiators in the house and what a job. I cleaned the kitchen walls. 



Sunday, April 20, 1969

A beautiful day. I got up early. After breakfast I got my washing to going. Washed all day, cleaned both bathrooms, cleaned lights, walls etc. Cleaned my bed. I did a big ironing in evening. Fern and Lloyd called.



Monday, April 21, 1969

I washed, cleaned Billie’s and my room and got some done in the living room. Bill painted window blinds all day. A pretty good day. A raw wind blowed most all day. Aunt Ava called a minute.

April 14 - 17, 1969


Monday, April 14, 1969 Began cleaning the New House

A beautiful warm or hot sunny day. Began to see the bare spots down through the fields. It was sunny warm all day. I washed, ironed, cleaned Billie’s closet, bureau draws and in our room. First time I ever cleaned here. I washed windows on the outside for first time this spring. Also washed them on the inside, very dirty on outside from the awful bad stormy and blowing snows of this past winter.



Tuesday, April 15, 1969

A very nice mild day. I did my bureau draws, bathroom closet and draws. Also desk draws. I washed again today. The snow went a lot today down through the field.



Wednesday, April 16, 1969

A beautiful day, warm and the snow went a lot today. I cleaned living room closet and did the upper cupboards in the kitchen.



Thursday, April 17, 1969

A very nice mild day. I did lower cupboards and draws. After supper I did the draws in the china cabinet unit.

April 10 - 13, 1969 Kim's Third Birthday

Cloudy rainy day. I finished at Aunt Ava’s. We did her sheds. I came home, took a bath, shampooed my hair. Got supper. Not much else. Bill worked at Gordon’s tonight. They made the window blinds for the house. $17. Lloyd traded cars, 1966 Chevrolet.



Friday, April 11, 1969 $4.50

A beautiful day. I worked at Dorothy’s. Came home, went over to June’s, got my hair set. Lloyd got his new car today. Very pretty. I went to town grocery shopping. Also shopping for Kim’s birthday. Snow went a lot today.



Saturday, April 12, 1969

A beautiful day. Billie didn’t have to work. He took me to town. I did rest of Kim’s birthday shopping for me and for Billie. We get the paint for the window blinds (yellow). In p.m. Bill painted some blinds and put some trim on garage and breezeway. Lloyd called, Gordon called. Fern up for supper. I wrapped Kim’s gifts.



Sunday, April 13, 1969 Kim’s birthday celebration, was three on 12th

A beautiful day. We got up early this morning, got ready and left here at 6:55 AM. Got Aunt Ava and drove to Concord. They just got up. We got there at 8:55, exactly 2 hours. They were glad to see us. Very glad Aunt Ava came with us. We had a very good time. A nice very good dinner. Birthday cake and ice cream. Dorothea, Dave and Jeff came also. Kim had a good time and a lot of gifts. She was very cute. Betty took Aunt Ava around over Concord. Came home, left at 4:30. Got home at 5:45. Fern and Lloyd up in evening.

A beautiful day. Up in the 50°. Snow settled a lot today. I didn’t get up too early. We had breakfast. I did up the work. Bill worked outside on the driveway, put in some gravel. Billie up to Chet and Lil’s. I got a good Easter dinner. Fern and Lloyd are the only ones here today.

Monday, April 7, 1969

Another nice day. I worked at Aunt Ava’s helping her clean in a.m. Came home, washed, got my supper to going and watched TV. Soap operas. Got a very pretty Easter card from the Horton’s and two cute pictures of the girls.



Tuesday, April 8, 1969

Clear and mild. I worked at Aunt Ava’s, did her bathroom and kitchen. Back still lame. Came home, washed and ironed. Got my supper.



Wednesday, April 9, 1969

Another nice mild day. I worked at Aunt Ava’s again, we did the spare bedroom and living room. Sent Kim’s birthday card. My back is better today. Came home, started my supper. Made a pudding. Lee Quimby’s birthday. They had a party for him on Dialing for Dollars and Swap Shop.
