The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 26 - 29, 1957



Wednesday, June 26, 1957

Rain again. I cooked. Kay up here today. Also other kids. I ironed. Bill only worked in a.m. Betty and Kay walked down to choir rehearsal. Billie went with Dennis to move a tractor. Donnie very sick tonight.



Thursday, June 27, 1957

Another rainy day. Bill worked in a.m. In p.m., he and I with Fern and Uncle Os went to Mildred Chadbourne’s funeral at the North Bridgton church. Betty been home all day. I cleaned up the house. Donnie not much different. Billie away tonight. I worked at Mrs. Dearborn’s this p.m. while Bill was at home.



Friday, June 28, 1957

It cleared off in p.m. Very hot. I did regular work, went to town in p.m. after Bill got home. Bill worked all day. Donnie still sick.



Saturday, June 29, 1957

Rained awful hard in a.m. and heavy winds. Hurricane Audrey going up through here to Canada. I cooked, cleaned up the house. Donnie still sick. In p.m. Billie was home, he, Betty and I picked berries. Bill didn’t work in a.m. Milan and Betty came in p.m. Blanche and little girl called in p.m. In evening Stan Whitney’s family called. Betty babysitting tonight at Dick Carsleys.

June 22 - 25, 1957



Saturday, June 22, 1957

A very nice day not too hot. Brud and family called. Sold 11 boxes strawberries today. Did up the work and in a.m. Betty and I pick strawberries. Betty down swimming in evening after supper. Bill and Billie moved Betty’s camp down to back in the field. Billie worked over to Jim’s after supper. Barbara Conant Autio called. I made root beer today.



Sunday, June 23, 1957 Hot

A nice day. We picked eight boxes of strawberries. Took them down to Ferns. Billie raked the hay. Gordon came and bailed it. Raymond came over and help them get it in. Had 114 bales. George Bowley and Glenn Chadbourne called. Rosalie Smart and son called. Also Don O’Brien. Betty to church. Got all the hay done at home today. Billie mowed at Lloyd’s for himself today. Sold eight boxes.



Monday, June 24, 1957 HOT

A very hot day. I did a very big wash. Donnie sick in the p.m. In evening Dawn Parks came up and spent the evening. Betty went down and stayed all night with Dawn Parks. Mildred Chadbourne died this morning early. Telephone man called.



Tuesday, June 25, 1957

It rained all day hard. Bill didn’t work. I worked at Thena’s. Betty went down to Augusta with Dawn Parks, first time she ever saw the capital building of Maine. Fern and Lloyd called in evening. Also David, Stevie and Kennie Whitney. Betty got a new bird today. Donnie sick.

I washed. Betty gone most of day. Hot.



Tuesday, June 18, 1957

A nice hot day. I ironed, cleaned up the house, cooked a cake. We picked 6 quarts berries today, sold to Mrs. Parks. My check came today. Two dollars. Paid bills by the dozen. Telephone man came and changed phone for a better one. Very pretty yellow one.



Wednesday, June 19, 1957

I nice day, not so hot. I worked over to Aunt Linnie is in a.m. In PM I washed sweaters and there was a bad thunder shower. Betty down swimming. Bill and I picked 7 quarts berries. Sold none.



Thursday, June 20, 1957

A nice day. Cool yet clear and warm. I didn’t do much. Cleaned up the house, picked 9 quarts berries. Insurance man came from Harrison. Dolores quite sick.



Friday, June 21, 1957

Picked 7 quarts berries. I went down to Dearborn’s today and cleaned up today. In evening Bill, Stevie, Betty, Donnie and I went to town. Billie mowed all the HAY  today. Took 7 quarts berries down to Ferns, she sold them all.

A nice day. I cleaned up the house. In p.m. went to town. Betty and Dawn, Stevie, Holly and Kennie all went berrying. Kennard and Kenneths birthdays.




Saturday, June 15, 1957 HOT

A very hot day. Betty came home from Dawn’s in middle forenoon and began to mow lawns. Billie home at noon and they finished lawns. Went to town, Billie got some new pants and a pair of shoes. I cleaned up the house, did some cooking. Lloyd’s birthday. Kennie and Raymond upcountry fishing.



Sunday, June 16, 1957

Hot. We had a light lunch at noon. In PM I wrote letters. Frank Potts house burned. Got my pay from Mrs. Dearborn. Called at Dolores, her grandnephew married this p.m.

A nice day. Bill worked in strawberry bed. Billie mowed lawns. Betty to church.

A very nice day. I washed, cleaned up the house. Betty down swimming with Stevie. In evening went over to Twitchell’s with Billie to take Mrs. Parks over to see a cow. Fern and Uncle Os called.



Tuesday, June 11, 1957

A very nice hot day. I worked down to Thena’s cleaning house. Mama and Donnie over to Aunt Ava’s for the day. Betty up to Stevie’s house. In evening Aunt Ava called. Dawn Parks and Stevie came after their pig. Kennard called, Blanche called also. I made cake, Jell-O and ironed.
