The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 5 - 9, 1956



Monday, November 5, 1956

Another nice day. I washed and churned. Paid up rest of the Christmas club today. Got another letter from Dorothea today. Kay here tonight.


Tuesday, November 6, 1956

I ironed. A very nice day. Raymond called. We made out some Christmas orders for Mama. Kennard and Dolores came home today. Raymond and I went down to vote today. Verna and children came home with Ken and Dolores. Pres. Dwight David (blank) reelected today by a national landslide over Adlai Stephenson.



Wednesday, November 7, 1956

A nice warm day. I cooked, washed curtains, scarves etc. cleaned shed chamber, grain room and my room. Ironed in eve.



Thursday, November 8, 1956

I finished up the upstairs and two bedrooms downstairs. Billie home all day sick. Rained in p.m. In eve we went up to Kennard and Dolores. Delores and Jeff called the AM.



Friday, November 9, 1956

Nice day but cooler. I cleaned the hall bathroom, living room and dining room. Got pictures from Bill’s mom and dad today. Betty got rank card for first time this year. Very good. Delores and Nola and Jeff called in a.m.

November 1 - 4, 1956



Thursday, November 1, 1956

First day of hunting. It rained. Bill hunted all day. Jerry Bishop and his son Larry called with two nice deer each one got this morning. Billie home about noon. He and I got the hen house ready for a new pullets. I got Dorothea’s box off today.



Friday, November 2, 1956

Cloudy in forenoon, cleared in p.m. and cooler. I cooked, cleaned up the house. Holly down after school. Betty stopped up to Kennard’s and fed Yum Yum.





Saturday, November 3, 1956

Betty and Kay to ballgame. A very nice day. Bill worked all day. I didn’t have much to do today. We got a very nice interesting cheerful happy letter from Dorothea today. To town tonight. Brought the pig home tonight. Betty to school dance. Billie brought a white pullet home tonight.



Sunday, November 4, 1956 Got Pullets and Pig


Another very nice day. Busy all day taking care of salt pork, lard, washed storm windows. Billie put them on. Bill worked with Lloyd at the camps. Betty to church. This morning Bill and Lloyd went after the pullets over to Lovell Joe True’s got 20 at $2. Billie got a pig up to Chet’s.

October 27 - 31, 1956



Saturday, October 27, 1956

Fair, some cloudy, not so cold. Delores called this forenoon. Bill home at noon. Fixed brakes on his car. Betty to football game first one she ever went to 41 Bridgton 4 Livermore Falls. Got a letter from Dorothea today.



Sunday, October 28, 1956

A very nice day. Betty down to ride old Fan with Kennie Whitney and his sister. I spent the afternoon with Dolores. Billie worked around home, hauled out rest of dressing in p.m. Bill worked at Lloyds.



Monday, October 29, 1956

I washed, ironed and cooked. A very nice day. I washed on the porch for the first time this fall. I churned. War began in Egypt.



Tuesday, October 30, 1956

I went downtown with Dolores to get pills for Bill. He is a little lame. We called at Flossie’s. In PM, I got ready to go away next day. Things quite serious – Great Britain and France joined forces.



Wednesday, October 31, 1956

A very nice day. I went up and spent the day with Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis. In evening Bill and I took Kennard and Dolores to Portland to take the train to New York to visit Carlton and family. Betty downtown tonight for Halloween. War new is very serious.

October 23 - 26, 1956



Tuesday, October 23, 1956

I ironed, cooked. It rained. Bill and Billie home, we dressed and wrapped all the old hens. 22 in the deep freeze tonight. Betty to Brunswick with the choir. Kay up here tonight. Lloyd up against tonight and wrapped beef.



Wednesday, October 24, 1956

A nice day. Mama went up to Aunt Ava’s all day. I cooked, cleaned up the house, washed etc. I went to town with Bill before supper. In evening Lloyd up and cut up another quarter of beef, ground hamburger over to Raymond’s to grind.



Thursday, October 25, 1956

I cooked, did regular work, ironed D. blouses and packed Dorothea’s box and got it off to her tonight. We cut up the last quarter of beef tonight. Uncle Os came up with Lloyd tonight.



Friday, October 26, 1956

A very nice day. I did regular work. Betty had a dance tonight given by some of the mothers.

I cooked and churned. It was cooler today. Paid the taxes tonight $105.50. Holly down after school.



Friday, October 19, 1956

A very nice day but much cooler. I cleaned up the house. Over to Aunt Linnie’s in evening.



Saturday, October 20, 1956

A very nice day. I did up the work. Bill home at noon. He and Lloyd worked on the strawberry plants. We went to town in the evening. Betty came home from Kay’s this morning. I get a $15.00 check from Lida today.



Sunday, October 21, 1956

A very nice warm day. Kay came home with Betty from church. Betty was on the mean side this morning. In p.m. Mama and I went down to Ferns to visit on her birthday while Bill worked with Lloyd. Sara married again to Norman and left for Florida. Billie worked over to Raymond’s today. Delores called. Betty down to Kays tonight.



Monday, October 22, 1956

A nice day. I washed, churned and done up the work. We cut up and wrapped a quarter of beef tonight. Took hamburg over to Raymond’s and ground in his meat chopper.
