The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 4 - 8, 1956



Monday, June 4, 1956

Cloudy in a.m., in p.m. it cleared off and got the clothes all dry. Kennie and Dot up in evening. Kennie very lame. Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis called.



Thursday, June 5, 1956

In forenoon, Es, Sue and I went down to Dorothy’s and called at Dolore’s. In afternoon I ironed. Bud Lowell called and got the lawnmower to going and they mowed all the lawns. Es downtown to Sarah’s with Fern and Uncle Os. Bill down to the camp in evening.



Wednesday, June 6, 1956

A very nice day. Walked over to Aunt Linnie’s, Susan, Es and I in a.m. In p.m. Es went up and visited with Phyllis and Dolores. Susan and I churned in p.m. We set out some plants in the evening. Es, Sue, Ma and I went down to the cemetery. Called at Dorothy’s and Forrest’s. Susan rode on old Fan while he and Forrest furrowed out. Bob and Blanche called in eve. Betty to movies. Kennie down to the hospital to see about his leg.



Thursday, June 7, 1956

Es, Phyllis and Mama up to the mountain today. Went up in the chair lift to the top of Mount Chocorua. Had a very good time. Susan here with me all day. Betty finished up school. In eve we went to the graduation. Very nice.

I cooked. Dolores up in a.m. Got the crib. I cleaned up the house upstairs. Check came from Lida today. Bill and I down town shopping etc tonight. A very hot day. Billie fencing.




Friday, June 1, 1956

A very nice day. I didn’t do much today. In p.m., Fern and I went to the seniors last assembly at the State Theatre. Very good. Came home with Bob’s folks. Mama painted chair today. Betty to the last seventh and eighth grade dance tonight. Billie fencing again tonight. Bill mowed some more lawns. Phyllis and Cindy came today by plane. Esther and Susan left home today.



Saturday, June 2, 1956

A fair day. I did a lot of work. In evening we went to town to shop. We bought a brand-new power lawnmower tonight from Lovell. Fern and Lloyd up in evening.



Sunday, June 3, 1956

Rained all day. We went to Brud’s to get Esther and Susan. Fern, Lloyd, Bill and I went. It cleared off late in afternoon. Had a nice visit at Brud’s. A nice trip home and ate at Vallee’s steakhouse. Was very glad to see Es and Sue also Brud’s family. Left home at about seven, got home at four in p.m. Phyllis, Cindy and Dolores called. Bob’s folks over in eve.

Friday, May 25, 1956

Fair, awful cold. I cleaned the cellar way and cellar and deep freeze. Ruth Littlehale called. Over to doctors tonight with Donnie. Bill and Billie hauled off limbs over in back field with Chet’s tractor. Betty to movies in evening with Jill. Bob went to Portland with our car for checkup. Very cold this morning and heavy frost this morning. Jim’s corn all killed. 27°. Got cards and letter from Dorothea.

A nice day, little warmer. I cooked, washed floors. Jill here all day. I cleaned the paintbrushes.



Sunday, May 27, 1956

A very rainy day, didn’t get up very early. Lloyd called. Bill Ridlon called. Bill sold his power saw today. Kennie and Dot here in p.m.



Monday, May 28, 1956

A very cold cloudy day. I did very big wash. Over to Raymond’s in evening.



Tuesday, May 29, 1956

A very nice day. I cleaned the grain room. Churned and cooked. Betty and Jill gone to the movies. Mama, Donnie, Bill and I down to the cemetery after supper. Lloyd made a dooryard call.



Wednesday, May 30, 1956

Cloudy all day. Betty to the parade in PM. I ironed and cooked. Charlie and Jean called in the p.m. Raymond called in evening. Blanche brought my new plastic drapes over this p.m. for the new bathroom.

Sunday, May 20, 1956

A very pretty day but cold. Bill put the light up in the bathroom upstairs. Helped Lloyd in PM. Billie and Betty fenced the pasture down back of the barn this a.m. and turned the cows out for the first time. Bobby helped Billie fence down in the woods in p.m. I did a little more painting. Billie cleaned up the rubbish outside. Joy and Buzz called.



Monday, May 21, 1956

I did a big wash, very cold. In the evening Blanche and I went to Portland to see Bob. We did some shopping. Betty brought home a little white kitten tonight. He is four weeks old. I did some more painting today. Cooked.



Tuesday, May 22, 1956

A very nice day. I varnished rugs and ironed. Done some cooking. Very hot. Furnish cupboards in the evening.



Wednesday, May 23, 1956

Very warm and mild in forenoon. In the afternoon it cooled off and rained. Bill and I cleaned Seaver’s cottage. Very cold tonight. Betty to movies in evening with Jill. Bill worked in the bathroom in eve.



Thursday, May 24, 1956

Cleaned up the house, cooked some, churned. In evening Fern and Lloyd called, Blanche and Bob. Painted (?) chiffernice upstairs.
