The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 4 - 10, 1048 Betty Starts School



Saturday, September 4, 1948

Bill and I took his father and mother over to Norway in eve. Charlie and Jean came over. Had clams. Made me sick.



Sunday, September 5, 1948

Went down and got Bill’s father and mother, here for the day.



Monday, September 6, 1948

Betty Smith and her mother here. Betty gave Dorothea and Betty their Tony permanents. Billie and Milan here for dinner. Nice day.



Tuesday, September 7, 1948

School began. Betty started, she was very nervous when she started but liked it very much. We washed.

Wednesday, September 8, 1948

A hot day. Bill’s father and mother came up. Charlie and Jean took their trunks to Portland. Charlie and Jack called in eve. We then walked up to Kennard’s  in PM.



Thursday, September 9, 1948

Grammie, Gramp and I called at Fern’s in p.m.



Friday, September 10, 1948

I finished ironing. We went down to Aunt Mina’s and  downtown in eve.

  1. That old Maple tree sure saw many generations of our family off to school..I wish It hadnt died..will have to go around to the new one and start pics there!
