The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 23 - 29, 1948



Saturday, October 23, 1948

Cleaned up the house, cooked. Sarah here in p.m. and all night. Joy here for eve and night. Bill went coon hunting with Bob, Raymond and Dennis.



Sunday, October 24, 1948

Lloyd and Bill plowed. Cold and cloudy. Bill hauled wood and sawdust with Bob’s truck.



Monday, October 25, 1948

Cold and rainy. Bill didn’t work. He has a bad cold and didn’t feel good. He and Kennard set up the new stove we bought of Jean’s. Bill got a new cap and haircut today.



Tuesday, October 26, 1948

Washed. Nice warm day. Aunt Ava down and washed too. Kennie up and fixed the stove.



Wednesday, October 27, 1948

Very nice day. Aunt Ava down. She did my ironing. I did little work upstairs. Bob and Bill gone coon hunting. Dorothea home for 4 day holiday.



Thursday, October 28, 1948

Mama came home tonight. I fixed door for the hens. Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis here in p.m. D. over to Joys.



Friday, October 29, 1948

Very nice day. I washed and ironed. Fern and Lloyd up in eve.
