The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 16 - 22, 1948 New Stove and New Card Table!



Saturday, October 16, 1948

Nice day but cold. Bill went with Bob coon hunting in eve.



Sunday, October 17, 1948

Cloudy and cold. Bill worked down cellar. Mama went for a ride with Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis. Milan here for dinner. Charlie and Jean called. Betty and I went to S. S.



Monday, October 18, 1948

Cold and rainy. Bill didn’t work. We hauled wood and sawdust. I washed. Bill worked at Abby Chadbourne’s.



Tuesday, October 19, 1948

Very cold. We took Mama over to East Stoneham tonight to visit at Perley Adams.



Wednesday, October 20, 1948

Very cold, rainy and snowed. Delores called, Evelyn, Raymond here and drilled hole for pipe. Charlie brought up the new stove.



Thursday, October 21, 1948

I washed and churned. Ilan, Fern and Lloyd called in eve. Dorothea went to halloween party, S. S. Teacher.



Friday, October 22, 1948

Cold. Betty and I took up the dahlias and glads. Cold. Evelyn R. and Abby Chadbourne called in p.m. We hauled wood and sawdust at night. I got new card table.
