The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 17 - 23, 1945 Thanksgiving Feast!!



Saturday, November 17, 1945

Cloudy and snowed some. Bill and Billie put paper on outside of new barn. Order came back from Sears. Bill, Dorothea, Betty and I went to town got shoes and overshoes for Dorothea.



Sunday, November 18, 1945

Rained all day. Bill and Billie worked in the tie up. Another egg  today. Dorothea got her certificate from Dr. Mabry to go to school.



Monday, November 19, 1945

Nice day. We washed. Got the clothes in. Dolores called in afternoon.



Tuesday, November 20, 1945

Very bad day. I ironed. Bill and I went to town got Thanksgiving groceries. I cooked a little. Rained awful hard. Lot of damage done in Portland. Dorothea’s snowsuit came from M. W.



Wednesday, November 21, 1945

Very nice day. Mama went down to Ferns. Harold Virgin and wife called. I cooked.



Thursday, November 22, 1945

Very bad rain today. Kennie and Rayburn got a 10 point buck at South Bridgton. For dinner chicken, roast pork, mashed and sweet potatoes, gravy, squash, onions, peas, cranberry sauce, fruit salad, pickles, hot rolls, custard, lemon, date pies, whip cream cake, Indian pudding, brownies, tea and coffee. Regular family.



Friday, November 23, 1945

Nice day. Fern sick, Mama went down there. Mr. Murray came and got 864 barn chicks.
