The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Saturday, January 5, 1946

We cooked. Billie and I went up to see where the fire was. Bill and I down town in eve. Milan and Billie to movies. Jack called tonight. Warmer.



Sunday, January 6, 1946

Bill worked on ice for Bill Ridlon. Milan worked for Bob. Brud came home tonight from N. C. Mr. Murray came and got rest of chicks outdoor.



Monday, January 7, 1946

We washed. Warm cloudy. Milan went down to Blanches with sinus.  Bill and I down in eve to Bob’s. Jack bought us hamburgers. Brud came up today.



Tuesday, January 8, 1946

Very nice day. Milan still down to Blanche’s sick with that sinus.



Wednesday, January 9, 1946

Cloudy, began to snow. Bob’s horse came. Milan came home from Bob’s this a.m. Kennie and Dot called. Kennie didn’t feel very good. Mama fixed quilt.



Thursday, January 10, 1946

Mr. Murray came and brought shavings. Kennie and Dot called in p.m.



Friday, January 11, 1946

Brud up to say goodbye. Billie cleaned out henhouse and moved hens out. He and Milan cleaned out the big chicks. Mama down to Ferns. Dr. Davis called to see Billie. Dot Prescott and family called
