The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 10 - 16, 1945



Saturday, November 10, 1945

Cloudy, cold tonight. Bill, Val and Billie cleaned some chicken houses. Billie went to town and got haircut. Cold wave hit here tonight.



Sunday, November 11, 1945

Billie, Bill, and Val finished cleaning out the chickens. Mr. Murray and crew came and got rest of the 1487 chickens. He took 536. He paid $100. Scoot Durgin bought three cords of wood for $30.



Monday, November 12, 1945

Rained. No school. Bill and Billie put windows in tie up. Dolores called. Mama came home from Ferns yesterday.



Tuesday, November 13, 1945

Rained. Bill and Kennie hunted a little. I sent out orders today for clothes  for 3 kids at Sears and a snowsuit for Dorothea at Wards.



Wednesday, November 14, 1945

I washed. Cloudy and rainy. Bill got the fox last night in the trap. Fern and Lloyd up in eve. Bill and I went downtown tonight.



Thursday, November 15, 1945

Nice day, I ironed. Washed floors.



Friday, November 16, 1945

Very nice day but very cold. We got our first pullet egg. And another the next day November 17. Bill and I called at Hotchkiss and Porter’s in eve
