The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 11 - 14, 1986 Valentine's Day

 

Tuesday, February 11, 1986

 

A nice day. Cloudy in a.m., sunny in pm. I been busy. Ironed etc. Milan, Betty, Betty called, went down to Betty’s a little while. Carmen back to work. She is sick and lame. Dorothea called and made a nice visit. She is suffering with that psoriasis.

 

 

 

Wednesday, February 12, 1986 perm

 

A nice sunny day. I got up early, got breakfast. Done up the work. Bill took me down to Barbara’s to get my perm. Betty came and got me. Bill and Billie to town.

I did some odds and end jobs. I made a custard. Carmen is very sick with flu and nervous tension. Dorothea called. I watched tv soaps. Did some on the puzzle.

 

 

 

Friday, February 14, 1986 Valentines Day

 

Well, I got nice valentine cards, roses and chocolate which was very nice. I did a wash. Carmen came, she and I went to norway shopping. Kim home sick with the flu, cold. Carmen felt better today. She went out and had a nice evening with a friend named Dennis. He has done wonders to help her get over the loss of Flicka. We all loved her very much.

February 8 - 10, 1986 Flicka Died

 

Saturday, February 8, 1986 FLICKA TO THE HOSPITAL IN NEW HAMPSHIRE LATE

 

A quite nice day, on the cool side, some clouds. I done up the work then Bill and I drove over to see how Flicka was. She was still very sick. The vet was there. Everyone is worried about Flicka. She was getting worse. So they decided to get her to New Hampshire to have the operation. Finally they got someone with a horse van to take her. Walt, Betty was there all pm. Charlene, Billie and David was there too. Flicka was very weak and sick when they left about 5:30 pm. Betty came home and Walt went with Carmen.

 

 

 

Sunday, February 9, 1986 FLICKA HORTON

 

Early this morning Betty called and told us the very very sad news. Flicka died on the operating table. Poor Carmen. She done the best she could. Flicka was very sick. She had the vet from Norway several times. The last time they said they couldn’t do anything more. They said it would be an operation, now to find out. They made arrangements to take Flicka to Rochester New Hampshire. It was very late when they got someone to take her. It was a hard day for everyone. Betty and Walt called at Carmen’s this pm. She want home when they got there. Dorothea and David called, Milan called. Kim and eddie called. Kim here for breakfast. Eddie and Kim gone to Marblehead Massachusetts. Carmen came home late in evening.

 

 

 

Monday, February 10, 1986

 

A nice day. I been busy, done the wash, made two pies. Carmen still all to pieces. I’ll be glad when she is used to things. It is awful. She has  to face this awful blow. We are all awfully sorry and the loss is terrible. It was hard to face or believe it is so.

February 5 - 7, 1986 Carmen's 23 Birthday

Wednesday, February 5, 1986 Carmen Christie Horton 23 years

 

It started out cloudy, snowy etc. But it cleared and was nice. Bright, sunny and warm 45° in PM. No school. I did my ironing. Made a cake. Did up the work and other odd jobs. Bill got blood today. Milan called. Dorothea called in late PM. Today I watched the programs. Got a nice baked sliced ham supper for Carmen’s birthday. She enjoyed that very much. After supper Kim and Eddie called. Betty, Walt and Zack. We had ice cream and cake. She went to Auburn shopping today. Barry working at Betty’s today. Clyde Rowe, a cattle dealer and friend and Billie’s, died today.

On the cool side. I been busy all day. I watched programs. Carmen called on her way to work. Barry worked at Betty’s. Milan called. Billie out today. Bill went to town.

 

 

 

Friday, February 7, 1986

 

A nice day. I done up the regular work. In pm I worked on the puzzle. Watched tv shows. Carmen called. Flicka is sick, she had the colic. The vet came and gave her something. Carmen discovered that when she turned Flicka out, something was wrong. When she got home tonight Flicka’s was still sick. I guess it wasn’t colic. She called the vet again. He came, they told her to walk her some more which she did. I called at Betty’s to see the new bathroom.

A beautiful day. I have been busy all day. Washed windows, floors, cooked today etc. Bill been reading. Billie done up his chores, up to David’s. Betty called a minute and Milan. A nice sunny day, on the cool side.

 

 

 

Sunday, February 2, 1986

 

It was cloudy this morning and snowing when we got up. Got up and got the work done. Got up at seven. Walt came up and had coffee. He made out some papers for Bill. Later on in a.m. I went over to Carmen’s with Betty and Kim. They worked on plans for the wedding etc. Then we went to Michael’s to a fashion show on wedding gowns and evening gowns. I won a prize for a gift of flowers. The electricity went off tonight for over an hour.

On the coolish side but sunny and clear. I worked at the desk making out bills etc. Betty Smith called today. Carmen called today. Barry back to work at Betty’s today.

A nice sunny day. I got the work done up and took off for Norway. Billie and I, we did the shopping. Carmen met us over there. She did a dite of shopping. Came home, took care of the groceries. Got supper. Bill to the doctors for checkup. Betty down to Naples to see about glass for her bathroom.

January 28 - 31, 1986 Challenger Disaster

 

Tuesday, January 28, 1986’s SPACE FLIGHT

 

Well another miserable day, very cold, windy, some sun off and on. A very very bad tragedy. The seven astronauts all were blown up in the space capsule in less than a half hour after they left the launchpad. It shook up the whole country. It was a terrible shock to the school children in Concord New Hampshire as their teacher was one of them.

On the cool side, some sun and some clouds. I done up my work and other things. In PM Betty and I went to Lewiston and got Carmen a new TV with control. In evening Walt, Betty and I took it over to her. She called here for breakfast this morning. She worked from 11 PM Tuesday to seven this morning. Bill to the Dr. for checkup. Cold this PM.

 

 

 

Thursday, January 30, 1986

 

A beautiful day, sunny and mild. Milan called. Carmen here for breakfast this morning. Out to lunch with her new boy friend Dennis. I’ve been busy all day. Walt here at suppertime with a paper for Bill to be filled out for the Medicare program. Carmen didn’t feel very good, tired, asthma. Dorothea called and got me a few things at the store.

I did up the work. Changed the beds. I did a wash. Billie out and in. Bill reading. Milan called. Zack gone away to a friends for the weekend.
