The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 24 - 27, 1958



Wednesday, September 24, 1958

A nice day. I cooked and churned. Mrs. Emma Wheeler came up and spent the day. Kennie and Dot up in evening. Bill called Twitchell tonight.



Thursday, September 25, 1958

A very nice hot day. I done up the work and odd jobs. Mama up to Dorothy Prescott’s all day. Bill and I over to Twitchell’s after supper. Bill bought a hot-water furnace off him. He came over and bought ours. Calf born. Fogg cow.





 Friday, September 26, 1958

A very nice hot day. I walked over to Raymonds and got some shell beans in a.m. Evelyn called this p.m. Bill and I went to the bank.




Saturday, September 27, 1958

A cold cloudy rainy day. Rained hard at night. Bill home all day. He got the old furnace ready to move. They took it to Twitchell’s and brought the other one back. Betty to movies.

A nice day. Dorothea and Dennis wedding anniversary one year. I washed, churned, cooked, done up the work. Betty to ball game. Minnie and her baby came down this p.m.



Sunday, September 21, 1958

A nice day in a.m., cloudy and cold in p.m. I wrote letters in p.m. Mama went for a ride with Aunt Ava. Betty up to Dawn’s today. Bill helped Bob clean out his well.



Monday, September 22, 1958

Rained in a.m. Bill didn’t work. Cleared off early p.m. I cleaned up the house. The white head Hereford was killed today. Billie and I down to Ferns in evening. Lloyd and Billie down to get liver and tongue. Dolores called in a.m.

A very nice day today. Picture of Jeffrey Dennis Adair came today. He is so cunning. A very nice looking baby. Dolores here all forenoon. Also we got a letter from Dorothea and Dennis.

I washed. Had supper on porch tonight. I went up to Lil’s and got some shell beans.

A cloudy day. I ironed. We shelled and froze shell beans. Billie out to supper.



Wednesday, September 17, 1958

Cold, cloudy. I churned, cooked, cleaned up the house. We canned corn. I sent Betty’s school insurance.



Thursday, September 18, 1958

Rain. Bill didn’t work. He and I fixed the dining room chairs. Mama down to Ferns. In p.m. Bill and I went over to Twitchell’s in Oxford. Kay up here for supper.



Friday, September 19, 1958

Cloudy. Bill went to work. He had to go to Auburn so he asked me to go. I did.

A nice day, cold and windy. Evelyn called and Dolores stayed all forenoon. In p.m. Norma Wildberger called and Dawn Parks. I cleaned up house, washed floors. Up to Lil’s in evening, got some shell beans.

A nice day, cool side. Miss (sp?) Kalwell, the child welfare woman called to see us about boarding some children. In p.m. we went to town.



Saturday, September 13, 1958 A good letter from ADAIRS

Cloudy all day. I churned, cooked, done up the housework. Betty took awnings off. Dolores called. Got such a nice letter from the Adair’s. They are coming east at Christmas if possible. Mr. Adair has got plane tickets for them.

A very nice day. We killed the turkeys, cleaned up the car. Down to Fern and Lloyd’s in p.m. for a cookout and visit. Cloudy in p.m. Raymond called in evening.

Partly cloudy. I didn’t accomplish much today. Betty up stairs all day picking over her things. Dot Prescott called. Bob and Blanche called in evening. Snaps of Jeffrey came today. I love them. Kennard and Dolores called.



Sunday, September 7, 1958

Cloudy. Not a very good day. I made a cake, took over to Raymonds. They feel better today. Ken and Dolores called. Bobby called. Aunt Ava called. Bill and Billie killed a turkey today. Bill and I down to Kennie and Dot, got some blackberries. Dawn called.



Monday, September 8, 1958

Cloudy in a.m. I washed. About 9:30 they took Aunt Linnie home from funeral parlor. In p.m. had her funeral. Nice and clear. She looks so nice. Had many flowers. Many friends and relatives attended. Bill Crook, Ervin Linscott, Fred Stevens, Gordon Brill were bearers.

A very nice day. Mama finished the blackberries. I cooked, churned, ironed. Dolores called. Lila and Bill called on way home, gave me their phone number. Dawn came up, got some strawberry plants. Bob and Blanche called in evening. Judy and Edith called in evening also Kennard.
