The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 27 -30, 1980

Saturday, September 27, 1980 Jersey cow sick, LADY GONE

 

A nice sunny day, on the very cool side. I done regular work then to I made a pie and rolls for the New Hope Farm supper. Also pies and rolls for myself. The Jersey cow had a bad case of indigestion. Today had to have the vet for her. She improved fast after he gave her a shot and medicine. Bill worked on the driveway getting it ready to blacktop it. Carmen here, Laurie and Cindy. Charlene called, also David here this morning. Cow is better tonight.

 

 

 

Sunday, September 28, 1980 Cow Better

 

A nice day. I done up regular work. Read papers etc. David called. Kim and Carmen and Zak called. They, Betty and Walt, all went to the fair. We saw great big moose tracks out here in the garden, that is what the kids called for, to see them. Bill, Billie and Ilan sawed some wood for Ilan. Bill and I went up to Dorothea and David’s. Also up to see Jr. Chadbourne’s new house.

 

 

 

Monday, September 29, 1980 DRIVEWAY, NO SCHOOL

 

A beautiful day, not too warm. I did a dite of washing. Bill started the driveway. Billie sawed the wood up to the shelter. Betty and the kids rode horseback. Teacher’s workshop day, no school. I worked at the desk most all day. Zak called and Kim, also Vince.

 

 

 

Tuesday, September 30, 1980 Got the meat back

 

A nice day after the fog and haze got burned off. Very mild and sunny. I didn’t do too much. A dite of wash, made a couple things for supper. Got the beef back today and in the freezer. Bill worked on the driveway all day. Billie hauled dressing to Susan and Fern. Walt home most of the day. He has begun his vacation.

A nice day after the fog cleared away. It was very warm in a.m. but we had a dite of shower then the wind blowed and it was much cooler, but nice and sunny. Betty and I cleaned the living room and Fern was here. She was a big help. She cleaned all the stuff that goes in the living room.

 

 

 

Wednesday, September 24, 1980

 

A beautiful day. I done up my kitchen curtains and other ironing. Betty came, she cleaned the kitchen. I made 3 squash pies and cooked a couple chickens for Betty’s supper. We got the room done about one. Then she went home and I did the floor. Billie sawed and hauled wood. Bill made 2 storm doors for Dorothea. Zak called after supper. Carmen called. Kim babysitting tonight.

 

 

 

Thursday, September 25, 1980

 

There was a good rain storm last night. A lot of rain, it cleared off in forenoon. Bill and Billie sawed and got rest of the wood in today. I went to town to shop. Didn’t get home until after 1:30.

A quite nice day. I did some wash. Also ironed. Done some cooking, made macaroni and cheese. I watched TV in PM. Bill up to Dorothea’s. Billie sawed some wood.

A very nice day. I done up my regular work. Went down to Betty’s. We cleaned the kitchen, she cleaned the cellar and utility room. We cleaned her front porch. All done now. Billie up to David’s and put his cow out. Bill up there in a.m. and helped to finish her little pantry.

 

 

 

Saturday, September 20, 1980

 

It has been cloudy all day. I didn’t get up until late. 6:30. I have been very busy all day. I cleaned the refrigerator, electric stove, did a good wash, did quite a dite of cooking. Washed floors. The well went dry again. Dorothea and David called in evening. Bill didn’t do much today. Billie up to David’s and around in PM. He, Dorothea and David went to check on the chickens. Steer is better it seems.

 

 

 

Sunday, September 21, 1980

 

It cleared off in middle a.m. It was very hot. I worked all day, cleaned electric refrigerator, cupboards, draws and did a big ironing. David called in day also during evening. Betty, Carmen and Zak rode horseback. Flicka no go.

 

 

 

Monday, September 22, 1980

 

It was cloudy and cleared in a.m. It was extremely hot. Dorothea and Dave up early and left to go to Vermont to see Dave’s grandmother and his mother, sister and rest of the family. Billie busy all day, up to Dave’s to take care of cows dogs etc. Also Bill fixed their water tank. Billie busy all day in and out. Betty came up, she and I cleaned the bedrooms and bathroom.

September 15 -18, 1980

Monday, September 15, 1980 Walter Ambrose Horton IV 11 years today

 

Today we started Betty’s housecleaning. Got Carmen and Kim’s rooms done. I came home about 1 PM. Betty done some other work. I came home, watched soaps. Then I got a good steak supper for Zak. He was here for his birthday. He enjoyed it very much. Tonight Carmen and Zak rode their horses. Flicka acted out and that made the pony act. Kim rode the pony too. Bill didn’t do much today. Billie busy all day. The steer not so good tonight. We’ll have to have the vet tomorrow.

A very nice day, sunny, on the cool side. Betty and I finished cleaning her upstairs. Also got her bed cleaned. Billie worked in the garden all forenoon. Bill called at Dorothea’s in a.m. Our beef weighed 475 dressed, Walt’s beef weighed 435 dressed.

 

 

 

Wednesday, September 17, 1980

 

Well it has rained all day. We cleaned Betty’s bedroom, the den, bathroom and I helped to do some of the living room. Betty finished after I came home. Bill worked up to Dorothea’s part of the day. Billie cleaned up some of the garden. I went up to Dorothea’s with Thena so Thena could see her home. She thought it was very nice. We called in to see the Bracketts too.

It cleared off today. I done up my work and went down to Betty’s. We done the dining room, back porch and she got most of the kitchen done. Tomorrow will finish. Billie done my shopping. Dorothea got me some things is PM at the F.N. Bill up to Dorothea’s in a.m. He went back in PM.

September 12 - 14, 1980 Party for Zak's 11th Birthday

I done a lot today. Also I made my green tomato mincemeat. Got it all done. I canned a few tomatoes. Billie in and out all day. Bill down to camp, finished up. Kim up here for supper tonight and is staying all night. Fern has a bad arm.

 

 

 

Saturday, September 13, 1980 DAVID GOT HIS COW AND HEIFER today

 

A mixed day as far as the weather goes. It has been sunny, cloudy and showers. David came, Kimmy here this morning. We done up the work. Then when Carmen and Betty came they went to North Windham. They bought a nice colored TV, remote-control. Also done some birthday shopping for Zak. Billie, David and Kim hauled David’s cow and heifer up this morning. David is a very happy guy now I tell you. Bill didn’t do much today. Well went dry tonight. Billie got water from barn well. I got all of my tomatoes can today.

 

 

 

Sunday, September 14, 1980 PARTY FOR ZAK’S 11TH BIRTHDAY, FLICKA, BEEF WENT AND WALT’S TOO

 

It was raining hard when I got up at 7:30. It had rained all night and hard most of the day. I got my work done up. Fern came up to stay till we went down to Betty’s for Zak’s 11th birthday which is tomorrow. He got money and a lot of gifts, had ice cream and cake. Joy’s family, Susan’s family, Dorothea and Dave, Fern, Bill and I and the Hortons. Flicka came home late this PM after being gone nine weeks and five days. 9 weeks 5 days. I hope she will be a good horse after that length of time of training. Steer sick.
