The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 21 - 27, 1946



Saturday, September 21, 1946

Bill stayed at home. Shingled two dom windows. Milan helped him. I baked some beans out of our own garden. Mama came home. Betty’s tricycle came today.



Sunday, September 22, 1946

Rainy. Mama here all day. Went back to Bob’s in eve. Kennard’s folks moving. Bill worked outside today. Betty (?).



Monday, September 23, 1946

We went to town. Cloudy. I washed. Milan and Betty here for dinner. Billie and Bill worked on the barn.



Tuesday, September 24, 1946

Another cloudy day. Bill worked. Blanche came home. Mama came back home. Fern and Lloyd called.



Wednesday, September 25, 1946

Kind of clearing. Bill worked. Milan didn’t work. Cleared off very nice in p.m.



Thursday, September 26, 1946

Canned 7 quarts of broccoli, 4 quarts of cauliflower. Used 12 quart jars of Delore’s. Mama went up to Uncle Willis’s. Very nice day.

Nice big garden!



Friday, September 27, 1946

Nice day. I washed, went over to Aunt Linnie’s in a.m. Billie over there in p.m.
