The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 12 - 18, 1946 The Crooks are coming! Oh Boy!!!



Saturday, October 12, 1946

Foggy today. It rained in p.m. Bill didn’t work. He and kids went to town in p.m. I washed, churned today. Had good R. K. beans for supper.



Sunday, October 13, 1946

Nice day. Bill helped Bob in a.m. Shingled on barn in p.m. Very cold.



Monday, October 14, 1946

Nice day. Washed. Lin Hill cleaned oil burners. Heard P. Truman talk. Took controls off (?).



Tuesday, October 15, 1946

Cloudy. Made a few pickles. Wrote to Esther. Got word Bill’s folks are coming soon. Jack called in eve.



Wednesday, October 16, 1946

Nice day. I churned. Fern and Lloyd went to Cornish Fair. I am going to New York with Bill and Jack to meet Bill’s folks so Bill said tonight! Oh Boy! Boys got 3 coons.



Thursday, October 17, 1946

Nice forenoon. I washed. Clouded up in p.m. Billie and Rayburn went hunting again.



Friday, October 18, 1946

Rained hard all day. Bill didn’t work. Milan didn’t work in p.m. The Bridgton Star came today for first time. I ironed.
