The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Bill down in woods and got a flag pole for Camp Encore Coda. Zak came up today. It has been a nice day.

Betty down to Dawn’s. Bill worked on flagpole. A nice sunny day. I washed a few things.

 

 

 

Friday, July 23, 1976

 

I went to town in a.m. with Bill. Came home and Betty and I went down to South Windham. Kids went with us. Laurie and Carmen stayed at the Animal Refuge Farm. Betty, Kimmy, Zak and I called at Dorothea’s. Stopped at a couple barn sales. They came and got the flagpole.

 

 

 

Saturday, July 24, 1976 LLOYD CAME HOME

 

I done my regular work. It was raining when we got up. It cleared. Kimmy watch TV most of the morning. I baked a few beans today. Billie and I picked the string beans. Bill was more or less busy. Billie down to New Gloucester, over to Twitchell’s and went to see about getting the pullets. Carmen up in PM. Today Lloyd came home from the NC Hospital after being in hospital for five weeks. He should have stayed another week.

July 17 - 20, 1976

Saturday, July 17, 1976 Billie mowed, cloudy when we got up, but it cleared

 

I done up my regular work, washed floors, went to couple barn sales with Betty. Also Fern went. In p.m. Fern was here. Billie mowed hay up to Bob’s and Buddy mowed. David up in late p.m. and for supper. Betty’s folks down to Dawn’s for a party. All afternoon and evening, they had a good time. It cleared off and was a nice day. I got birthday cards ready to go.

Sunday, July 18, 1976 sunny

 

This is been a quite nice day except a few clouds in middle of day. I washed, done regular work. Esther here in p.m. Betty went down to Amatos and Fern, Esther and I went with her. We all got Italian sandwiches and brought them back here and ate them. Also I had a whip cream cake. Esther, Cliff, Betty, Walt, Carmen, Zak and Laurie and us. Today Carmen got thrown off the horse. Flicker got hurt. She started to jump the fence. Walt made Zak a bow and arrow set today. Billie up to Chet’s today.

 

 

 

Monday, July 19, 1976

 

A very nice sunny day. I did a dite of wash, I did my ironing. Betty away all day. Bill didn’t work. Picked more string beans and raspberries today. Kim came home from Joy’s. Laurie went home. This is Pat’s birthday.

 

 

 

Tuesday, July 20, 1976 Walt’s birthday, landed on Mars

 

It has been a nice day, hot. I done my regular work. Betty to Portland, she took Zak down to Dawn’s. Carmen and Kim home. Carmen made cookies. Kim made a birthday cake for Walt’s birthday. Bill down to the spring, down town, hauled the rubbish off. They had a birthday party for Walt tonight. It was seven years ago Neil Armstrong stepped on the moon. Today on Walt’s birthday they landed on the star Mars.

Cloudy all day, got rain showers. I done my regular work. I got the clothes on the line and dried. Got them all in. Bill finished Mr. Saltman’s doorsteps. Fern came up in a.m. to stay for rest of the day and supper. We looked over some old papers, letters etc. I had in a can. They are some things Mama had, also Aunt Ava. Kimmy up here today and for supper. Carmen over to Laurie’s today and last night. Billie to the hospital to see Lloyd and Robert. They are quite good. Kimmy here for supper.

 

 

 

Wednesday, July 14, 1976 CLOUDY, a little sun at times

 

Cloudy and some sunshine, same as yesterday. I done my regular work. I did that ironing, defrosted refrigerator. Zak here most all day. Kimmy and Carmen’s name markers came. Bill working at Camp Encore Coda today all day. The coffee group met at Betty’s this morning. I began looking those papers over. Went to the hospital last night and saw Pat. Dr. don’t give a very good report on Robert. His heart is bad. Lloyd just about the same. He began to walk with his walker.

 

 

 

Thursday, July 15, 1976 cloudy again we got up

 

Mostly cloudy and some showers. I done my regular work. Bill worked at camp. Betty down to Dawn’s. Billie down in the dumps about his work at M & M. We had string beans tonight. Phyllis and Amy came today. Esther, Susan and children met them at the airport.

 

 

 

Friday, July 16, 1976

 

I done up my work. Did some washing. In p.m. I went to town with Fern and Esther. Betty and kids down to Dawn’s except Kimmy, she was here. Betty’s company left about one. I’m glad I had a chance to get to town with them. Bill was working, Betty was gone. Phyllis and Amy called in evening.

July 10 - 12, 1976 Big Party for Gabriel's First Birthday

A quite nice day, sunny and on the quite hot side. They mowed the lawns. I washed and ironed, cleaned up the house. Zak came up and stayed all night. Betty and girls to Lewiston for a singing group was there the girls wanted to see. Betty, Carmen, Debbie, Laurie and Dawn all went. The girls got one of the guys autographs. Sunday, July 11, 1976 Quite a nice day

 

This is been quite a nice day weatherwise. I done my regular wash and work. Zak had breakfast, went home middle of forenoon. They had a cookout at Betty’s. And friends, not her old folks as she usually has except for Joy and family. There were ones never there before for a cookout with them. They had the best time, played ballgames etc. It was such a nice day. Billie relaxed most of today also. He brought Chet down to his place a little while. Betty, Carmen and Laurie up here in evening. Joy’s three girls stayed at Betty’s tonight because Joy and Buddy are going to Topsham tomorrow.

Monday, July 12, 1976 Rain

 

When we got up it was raining very hard. It was a showery day, thundershowers and all. I done my regular work. I did a big ironing. Bill worked on the door steps. I went down to Betty’s to babysit while she, Carmen and Laurie went somewhere. Three of Joy’s kids stayed over last night. Robert is much better. He is moved into a regular room now.
