April 2 - 5, 1969 Eisenhower Buried

Wednesday, April 2, 1969 President Eisenhower buried today

Cold and cloudy. In late p.m. it cleared. I done up regular work, made a couple pies and tarts. I cooked a chicken stew for supper. I watched the last of the programs of General Eisenhower’s funeral. He was buried at last out in Abilene, Kansas from where he started from. He was (I feel) the greatest man of this country. He liked everyone and everyone liked him. If only there were more men like him, this country needs them and bad. I called at Aunt Ava’s this evening.

Thursday, April 3, 1969 Peg, Susan and Betty and Jim

Mild temperatures. A nice sunny day, I washed, finished reading papers, magazines. Jean comes home today after being away all winter in Lynn, Massachusetts working. I called at Ferns in evening while Billie went to get his haircut. Lame back.

Friday, April 4, 1969 $4.50

I worked at Dorothy’s this forenoon. Pat Linscott called, Red Cross. I worked at my desk. Got supper, went to town after supper. Fern and Lloyd called. Been kind of cloudy. Got a Easter card and Norma Gay’s wedding pictures from Betty today. Kennard called.

It was showery here in a.m. Cleared late in PM. Billie didn’t work. He went to Kezar Falls with Lawrence. Bill and I to town in p.m.

March 29 - April 1, 1969 Country in Mourning

Saturday, March 29, 1969

Cloudy in a.m., it cleared in evening. On the cooler side. I done up my work. Took a bath. Billie had to work at Raymond. He went with Lawrence Boynton in p.m. Bill and I take Dave’s gifts down to him in p.m. Dorothea has kids there she is babysitting for. She looked tired. Came home, had supper. Delores called in late p.m.

Sunday, March 30, 1969

Clear, cold and some wind. I done up the work. Got up at about 8:30. Made a pie (apple). No one here all day. Billie cleaned his car windows. Bill and I watched TV. Dwight D Eisenhower’s services in Washington. Billie read. In evening Billie and I went down to Fern and Lloyd’s to see their colored TV. It snowed, sleet and rained in Washington today.

Monday, March 31, 1969 Day of mourning for Eisenhower proclaimed by Pres. Nixon.

Cold, cloudy, snow flurries. A very cold raw day. I done up regular work. Washed, hung clothes outside. Aunt Ava called. Snow flurries today, very cold and raw, some wind. Bill home from work at noon, in honor of DDE.

 

Tuesday, April 1, 1969

Bill came home at noon and took me to town. I did my ironing, done up the housework. Talked on the phone, watched TV programs etc. Made a cake. Cooked a roast of pork.

March 26 - 28, 1969 Eisenhower Dies

I did the ironing, got a letter off to Esther and sent negatives. I got the papers all read. Didn’t do too much. Talked with Dorothea tonight. Aunt Ava called today. She got her car out first time since before Christmas.

Thursday, March 27, 1969

A nice day, on the mild side. I did regular work. Washed windows, cleaned oven. Defrosted the refrigerator. Made a batch of brownies, called Betty. Nothing new on her moving or about Kim. Had the front door open, sun shining in. A very pretty home. I hope we get the new room on. Fern and Lloyd called to watch TV.

Friday, March 28, 1969 $4.50 DWIGHT DAVID EISENHOWER DIED 12:25 PM

40° temperatures. A very nice day. I worked at Dorothy Prescott’s. Did my regular work before I went. Came home, did a washing. Hung everything outdoors. Snow settled some more. Can see tops of cars when they go by. At 12:25 PM today ex- Pres. Eisenhower died. Had been hospitalized in the hospital (Walter Reed) for nearly one year. It was April 29, 1968. He was one of the greatest men of the United States. A great Army man. He was Supreme Allied Commander of World War II in Europe.

March 23 - 25, 1969 State Theater Collapses

Sunday, March 23, 1969

A nice day. I got up early. Made a pie, got a smoked shoulder in to bake. Made an oyster stew. Bill slept most all day. Folks watched TV. Kids played. Betty and Walt called at Aunt Ava’s in late p.m. Carmen outside with Billie, he dug out clothes line.

Monday, March 24, 1969 Took out Insurance, State Theater, Walt got a job in Maine

A nice sunny forenoon. Clouded up in PM. Real mild temperatures. Walt got ready and left for Augusta at about 9:30. Betty, kids and I did up the housework. Washed etc. Betty and I saw our programs. Kids out of doors for a little while. Betty made a chop suey for supper, very good. Aunt Ava to the dentist to see what her trouble is with her mouth. State Theater collapsed tonight about 9:30 PM. Ken Proctor and insurance guy called. Bill took out an insurance on me for burial.

Tuesday, March 25, 1969 Snow and heavy rains

A very bad day, very heavy snowstorm in the morning and at about noon it began to rain and rained so hard all afternoon. I done regular work and wrote letters in p.m. I made a pudding. This has been an awful day. I went to town with Fern and Lloyd to see the State Theater building which collapsed under the heavy snow. Betty called, everything is still okay. Norm and Barbara Stanford called this evening.
